Kindergarten-Grade 3-A companion to the popular You Read to Me, I'll Read to You: Very Short Stories to Read Together (Little, Brown, 2001), this book offers eight fairy tales to inspire a wonderful read-aloud experience for two voices. The color and placement of the text on the pages indicate the different parts. For example, "The Little Red Hen" begins with voice one, in orange type: "I'm Little Red Hen./I planted the wheat./I dug up the soil/In the dust and the heat." Then, voice two, in magenta: "And I am the Duck/And I have to admit/That I did not help her,/Not one little bit." Each tale ends with both participants sharing the refrain: "You read to me./I'll read to you." Hoberman doesn't offer full renditions of the stories, but rather uses the characters and one or two plot elements to create retellings that will entice children and encourage them to keep reading. The selections all have happy endings; in "Jack and the Beanstalk," the ogre agrees to share some of his treasure with the boy, and Little Red Riding Hood takes the Big Bad Wolf out to lunch where they read together while waiting for their food. The verses are rarely forced or faltering, and the two voices join seamlessly together to create a truly delightful reading ensemble. Emberley's humorous illustrations feature expressive characters drawn in pen, watercolor, and pastel, and are liberally scattered throughout the text.

Gr. 2-4. Like You Read to Me, I'll Read to You: Very Short Stories to Read Together (2001), this is an exuberant picture-book read-aloud with short, rhymed, illustrated scenarios for two voices. This time the eight stories are fairy tales--fractured fairy tales--and, as Hoberman says in her introduction, new readers will need to know the originals in order to enjoy the fun. In fact, even seasoned older readers will love the parody. Little Red Riding Hood takes Grandma and a starving wolf to a restaurant for lunch. Goldilocks befriends Baby Bear and takes him home with her to get some porridge (since she ate up all of his). Each story ends with former enemies reading together. Cinderella, for example, invites her gross sisters to live with her in the palace, and they share a good book while the prince reads nearby. Emberley's clear comic-style pictures are hilarious. The big but vulnerable ogre in "Jack and the Beanstalk" has a nose ring and earrings, and a cool Jack in sunglasses and high-heeled boots makes a deal. Great for readers' theater. Hazel Rochman

Perfect!! Buy these books. The colors on the text breaks up the reading to make it a two partner deal. Mom/dad read purple and the kid reads red. Take turns and switch it up. Lots of repetition which is perfect for learning.

Read WITH Your Child

I am a language therapist working with communication-impaired children and their parents. While most parents read to their children, they fail to do it in a truly interactive way - asking questions, making comments, asking for predictions, encouraging the child to reflect on the action and characters in the story. This is a wonderful series for children who are able to read. It's like performing a little play and the parent serves as an expressive model for the child. I use it with my students and it is highly motivating, fun, and recommended!

Veeeeery Scaary!

This is the fourth of the "You Read to Me, I'll Read to You" books that I have bought and it is my favorite so far. I got one to have at my house to read to my grandchildren and liked it so much I ordered copies for each of the families. The stories are very short and a lot of fun to read. It's a good book for year round but will be especially good for Halloween.

• the new system of lay/professional judges;

• the liberalization of the rules under which parties to litigation may be required to produce documents previously off limits;

• certain categories of “indirect discrimination” and the limitations on conduct that can be so defined;

• the complete revamping of the education system for lawyers;

• the new Labour Court designed to settle employer/employee disputes more quickly and effectively;

• the increased extent of a news reporter’s privilege not to disclose sources;

• legislation designed to protect spouses from spousal abuse;

• new criminal law on police interrogation techniques;

• growth in judicial review including Constitutional and Administrative cases; and

• family law—surrogacy, adoption, international custody and differences in the definition of “spouse” for various purposes.

Although the alteration of the legal landscape in Japan is highly visible, the author does not hesitate to raise questions as to how far-reaching the changes really are. In almost every branch of the new Japanese legal practice he uncovers ways in which laws and judicial rulings are closely qualified and are likely to present challenges in any given case. He reminds the reader in each chapter that “what you see may not be what you get.” For this reason, and for its comprehensive coverage, this second edition is sure to gain new adherents as the best-informed practical guide for lawyers with dealings in Japan.

Witty, well-written comparison of US and Japanese law

This book is a well-written comparison of the U.S. and Japanese legal systems. Goodman spends each chapter discussing a different topic, from contracts to religion . He uses U.S. law to familiarize the reader in that particular legal field. Goodman is particularly interested in exposing the differences between the systems and how there are deeper meanings and interpretations in Japanese law than we might expect based on the text. For example, Japanese judges are much more inclined to take into account a defendant's economic and family status than a U.S. judge. Very interesting book for anybody studying comparative law.

A text which fails to consider its potential audience

For a book which appears to have been intended to convey new information, this one fails to present its material in a way that draws in anyone that is less to not even remotely familiar with the subject. Those who would find the the approach taken to conveying the subject compelling likely have far less to gain through a reading of this book's material.

Then again, I might recommend this as an insomnia cure, in which case I would say it is a very effective work.

Worth The Wait...

There's not much I can add to the other 75+ glowing reviews of this book, but I absolutely recommend it. If you've read the prequels, then you're obviously going to read this, the first novel full novel of the actual series. I got very impatient waiting for Mr. Jace to finally release this book, but it was worth it. The story is original, the characters are engaging, and the plot moves along at great pace...especially near the end.

Overall, I just love these stories, and can't recommend them enough. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series. I would love to spend just one hour inside the head of Cameron Jace...where he comes up with some of this stuff, I'll never know, but the guy is definitely a born storyteller!

Be prepared to get your mind blown!

From the first time I've seen the prequels come by in my "recommended" list, I've been hooked. Cameron Jace is an extraordinary writer if it comes to clever connections, interesting points of view and a story so well written it is amazing! All your favourite characters of the Grimm fairy tales (and some others) pay a visit in the prequels and I have been waiting very patiently for this first book to come out.
This book is amazingly well written. If you're from America, you're in for a twist because not everything is as you're used to in this story. In this story you meet Loki Blackstar, a dreamhunter who is going on an incredible adventure. As I do not want to say too much in case I accidentally do a "spoiler" I will just say this:
If you LOVE a well written story, that has multiple levels, clever thought out plots, is unpredictable, exciting to read, really good connections made with rhymes and history in the real world as we know it and with an incredible depth to the characters in it, my suggestion is to ABSOLUTELY GET THIS BOOK!

I read it in one day and I loved it. I do really suggest to read the prequels as well since they will bring more depth to this story, but dont worry if you haven't read those or want to read them after, you will still be able to understand exactly what is going on ;)

From the first page this was a book that hooked me. I found it a new and interesting take on the classic tale of Snow White. The plot was well thought out and full of pleasant surprises that if you have read the sequels you may see before they are revealed. Don't worry if you havent, it isn't necessary to enjoy this book. My only complaint is that i wanted it to continue. The characters were like old friends. I for one am eagerly awaiting anything from Cameron Jace on this delightful series.

A Dark Derangement

I Will Rot Without You is a strange and wonderful read. It is poetic and horrific. It is like a beautiful piece of gory art. It is a Jackson Pollock written with the blood and guts of heartbreak and brutal self-effacement. I pictured this book as an episode of Creepshow. I saw it as a whimsical horror film short directed by Lucky Mckee. This is May with heart and color. You follow the main character on a journey of physical and emotional disintegration that pulls you deep into your own emotional soup. All the soft fleshy gooey parts that you want to hide, Danger Slater exposes for all to see and feel and smell in vivid strokes. This is an art book. It has to be felt to be experienced. The language is flowing and lyrical but not overdressed. The pacing starts off slow but by the third act it is galloping. I recommend this book to those who love horror with heart, as well as expressive surrealism, and lyrical Bizarro.

One Incredibley Gooey, Codependency Nightmare

Remember that anti-smoking commercial where the person slowly becomes this festering tar-coated human-tumor while puffing away on the tv screen, the idea of “what if you could see what is going on on the inside, on the outside…?” Danger Slater takes that concept to a WHOLE ‘nother level. I WILL ROT WITHOUT YOU may be one of the most disgusting, uncomfortable, offensive allegorical books in the Bizarro market. Do you cross your legs and squirm at the thought of bodily fluids spurting from crusty openings? Does the idea of extreme codependency measures make you want to run away somewhere quiet and have blood pressure about it? Are there taboo lines—say, with people mulching during sensual moments—you just cannot cross? Then this ain’t for you, junebug.

I got all of three chapters into this very quick, deliberate, and insane read, before I realized I was not going to put it down until complete. It’s not that the writing—which is very well done, by the way—is that incredible, so much as the words disappear altogether and you are left with this beautiful blood bath. And it just keeps flowing. Danger Slater does a fine job of upping the ante, whether with his exterior tension, or the psychological blend of brokenness he allows to manifest in the most abstract and often profane ways. There are moments when it seems like things can’t get any more bizarre or worse for the protagonist, Ernie Cotard, but he finds a way to turn the situation into an even tighter pressure cooker.

I won’t give details as there are more than enough in the other reviews, but will say this a very well written and finely imagined story that strikes all of the Bizarro chords, balancing just right so even though it may be part of the strangest genre, it still manages to suspend belief by brute force and pure immersion. Truly awesome book, an easy five stars!

Having Danger as a first name carries many obligations. To carry Danger as a first name (or middle name, for that matter) means having to be able to satisfy a cadre of women no matter how fluid-depleted you are. It requires one to be quick witted and given to improvisation so that when podcast hosts ask you to return for an ongoing saga extolling the virtues of proper phone etiquette, you're capable of delivering where the show's own host cannot. Being called Danger means being able to pay the bills with no monetary means other than one's own charisma. It means knowing all martial arts without once wearing a gi or even taking on a sensei. Indeed, it can even be argued that someone named Danger is the metaphysical fountain from which all martial arts sprang, scattered to the distant past for those not named Danger to sermonize to people lacking in the area of self defense. Finally, possessing the first name Danger requires that, should the circumstances merit, you are capable of authoring a book.

Ernie Cotard is broken down from a bad break-up. The roaches of his apartment have attained a more human consciousness and are transforming the environment through the usual suspect of fungal pollen. He meets someone new, someone who is even more damaged than him as her boyfriend sews his body parts onto her as a more proactive means of marking his territory. What's interesting about Ernie is that he's not the usual 'chosen one' archetype. He's a main character that realizes he's not a main character, that this is not his story even though it is. Something we can all relate to.

This is definitely a maturation of Danger's style, perhaps even too much as Ernie occasionally uses words an unspectacular protagonist such as himself would never use, words such as desideratum and stentorian. This is my mildest and only criticism of the story.

Gablik's thesis is not original. ``Since the Enlightenment,'' she maintains, ``our view of what is real has been organized around the hegemony of a technological and materialist world view...we no longer have any sense of having a soul.'' Spirituality and ritual have been the first casualties of this attitude, but the most profound reordering, Gablick says, has occurred in the area of social relations, as the spread of individualistic philosophies has weakened or destroyed the cohesion of traditional communal structures--leading to the modern artist understanding his or her vocation in terms of the objects created rather than the audience addressed. If the artist has any awareness of the audience at all, it is usually seen as a hostile force to be either ignored or shocked (this is the lesson Gablik draws from Richard Serra's Tilted Arc controversy). What is needed, we are told, is an aesthetics of ``interaction and connection,'' in which the artist works to restore the lost harmony between humanity and earth, and to override the alienation of race, sex, and class. At this point Gablik's argument falls into New Age obscurantism and is weakened further in that most of the exemplars of her approach (sculptors who design carts for the homeless, photographers who document toxic-waste dumping, etc.) sound more like social workers or advocacy lawyers than artists. A valuable analysis that brings forth incredible conclusions. Gablick has apparently fallen into a deconstructionist vocabulary that allows her to play fast-and-loose with concepts of ``art'' and ``creation,'' resulting in a confusion little better than the one she set out to overcome. Art for ecological action.

The Reenchantment of Art is a passionate plea for artists to reacess the thought and practice of a century of modernism. Gablick`s earlier book, 'Conversations before the end of time' was a collection on interviews and discussions with critical thinkers on environmental issues. The Reenchantment of Art refines the issues raised in the interviews of the earlier book toward a contemporary art focus. It speaks against individualist thought in art making, pointing artists toward new possibilties in art practice.
Using examples of environmental artists, Gablick provides insights into new working methods of important contemporary artists. These artists are using their creative abilty to ammend the destruction of modern society by engaging in art practices that give 'something worthwhile' back to the earth and its people.
Environmental art is of critical importance in this next century. Gablick`s book shapes the foundation of perhaps the most important movement in contemporary art theory.

Helps re-establish the web of interdependence upon which our lives hinge

Those with eyes to see and hearts that can still feel, can readily see that the one thing we need most, if we are to save ourselves and our planet from collapse under our appalling and arrogant abuse of nature, is to re-establish ourselves in the web of interdependent relationships with each other, the earth, and all natural and spiritual beings. Suzi Gablik's vision in this book is in line with this healing vision, which after all, represents art as it was at the dawn of time: ancient art was healing art, magical art, connected art, folk and naive art.

With increasing "civilization" , Gablik points out, art has lost its magical, mythical and earth-derived power: its power to enchant. Any person with "common" sense, which is an earthy sense, can see that where the art world stands now is often so idiotic: as Gablik points out so well, art has capitulated to the forces of the marketplace, and idiots gleefully delight in the way their commodity-art provides a nice income for them, because the who's-who's of the capitalist corporate marketplace just love that art too has become a prostitute to their greed and lust for power and wealth. Those who want to do meaningful art need not to become prostitutes, and Gablik's book points the way to the older ways of art, which, just like the older, Pagan ways of religion, ironically emerge as part of the vision of the needed way forward.

Two areas where Gablik's vision for art could be expanded, areas she didn't explore as fully as might be explored: the benefits that can be gained from viewing the role art played in the most ancient societies, the Paleolithic Goddess statuary and cave paintings, the shamanic aspect of art, and thus the link of art with various "Pagan" religious/spiritual orientations. Here lies enormous meaning. In this direction too, we can contemplate that as art returns to its archaic roots in search of meaning, the distinction between "professional" artists and folk or naive artists, will very likely diminish, and this is something Gablik makes no mention of.

It is evidence of a lack of both social and psychological integration, that any society, rather than viewing EVERYONE as capable of creative work, and calling us to it, prefers to "project" its own creativity onto an "elite" group, which performs this necessary function, presumably for others, though this elite has done so since the early 20th century with varying degrees of contempt for and disengagement from those others. An astute observer could read behind this contempt, the natural result of psychological splitting. No one in their depth is really satisfied with a situation where "we" create for "you", because you all refuse to take the responsibility to awaken to your own creativity. If you shove off your creativity onto us, naturally we will eventually become contemptous of you. Thus we can understand the contempt and arrogance of modern art as a predictable result of an unhealthy psychological and social situation.

In ancient times, art was not the exclusive province of some highly trained elite corps. It was done by the plain "folk." The value of one simple, untrained individual now striving, against all cultural programming, to create something with pen or paint or clay out of a vital and real NEED, is an act of a far more profound significance and touching pathos than 99% of the idiot trash created by a self-indulgent and cynical, snobby and increasingly irrelevant "art elite." Many have written on the spiritual and psychological significance of the PROCESS of art, wholly apart from the PRODUCT that may be produced: MIchell Cassou, Pat Allen, and Joanna Field and many others. The emergence of a new vision of art which is inclusive of the efforts of plain common people to paint their world out of a vital psychological and/or social need, is of enormous value for the future.

This book really got me to question why we need art, and what roll art plays in society today. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to discover hope in a seemingly dark word. It helped me to realize that art influences, and that we should let art influence us.

One comes to an arrangement with the situation; reciprocal indifference is negotiated." (19)

Buy two textbooks and leave one at home-save your back!

The textbook was a great price and in great condition for a used book. For this price, it was completely worth it for me to purchase an additional textbook so that my daughter's backpack was lighter. Lugging these heavy backpacks back and forth to school on a daily basis is exhausting to say the least.

DO NOT BUY IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE 5 Day Pouch Owners Manual. Complete waste of money!!! They are the exact same recipes, there are not even extra recipes added that weren't in the owners manual.

The purpose of this book is to present, describe and demonstrate the use of numerical methods in solving crack problems in fracture mechanics. The text concentrates, to a large extent, on the application of the Boundary Element Method (BEM) to fracture mechanics, although an up-to-date account of recent advances in other numerical methods such as the Finite Element Method is also presented. The book is an integrated presentation of modem numerical fracture mechanics, it contains a compilation of the work of many researchers as well as accounting for some of authors' most recent work on the subject. It is hoped that this book will bridge the gap that exists between specialist books on theoretical fracture mechanics on one hand, and texts on numerical methods on the other. Although most of the methods presented are the latest developments in the field of numerical fracture mechanics, the authors have also included some simple techniques which are essential for understanding the physical principles that govern crack problems in general. Different numerical techniques are described in detail and where possible simple examples are included, as well as test results for more complicated problems. The book consists of six chapters. The first chapter initially describes the historical development of theoretical fracture mechanics, before proceeding to present the basic concepts such as energy balance, stress intensity factors, residual strength and fatigue crack growth as well as briefly describing the importance of stress intensity factors in corrosion and residual stress cracking.
