He has translated 'The Song of Roland' for Penguin Classics and he has published widely on 12th-century courtly literature. Keith Busby is George Lynn Cross Research Professor of French and Director of the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the University of Oklahoma.

As enjoyable today as in the 12th century

The Hanning and Ferrante edition of Marie de France's lais is satisfying on two levels. First, the translation and commentary are unsurpassed. Second, the twelve short tales are gems themselves.

Translation of poetry from one modern language to another is difficult, let alone from Anglo-Norman French to modern English. This edition manages it beautifully. Abandoning the original's octosyllabic couplets for free verse, the brevity and simplicity of the verse are preserved.

An introduction sets the lais in place and time. Essentially nothing is known of Marie de France personally, so the introduction centers on the history, culture, and language of the 12th century. Modest footnotes supplement the text, but the strongest editorial contributions are the commentaries that follow each lai. While not completely necessary to an understanding of the stories, which can stand on their own, the commentary definitely enriches one's experience of these old Celtic/Breton tales.

Marie herself offers commentary on the tales as a whole in a Prologue, and frequently with a short statement at the beginning of an individual lai. This multiple framing of story within author commentary within modern commentary gives the reader great richness and depth. Marie's short but dense prologue offers philosophy and theory of writing that is still being reinterpreted.

The lais themselves are self contained and unconnected in plot, but typically involve a chilvaric episode or a courtly love situation, and a complication. The narrative moves quickly. These are not dull and laborious love stories, but adventures. In fact much is made in the critical world of the word "aventure" which translates as chance and luck as well as adventure.

Marie de France is known for using a marvel as a plot device. A marvel is a strange, exotic, sometimes magical, element upon which the story hinges. Milun and his lover, for example, exchange love letters for twenty years - love letters carried secretly between them by a swan.

Marie de France was likely a slyly disruptive force in the masculine court that she seems to be writing for. Bold and brave women are the rule. A reversal of masculine and feminine roles is not unusual. In Lanval a randy lady faerie queen, a pucelle, and her female knights completely overpower King Arthur and his court in a bloodless but completely effective rescue mission of a wrongly accused knight. The accuser is Arthur's queen, Guenivere is not named specifically, who definitely shows us her dark side.

I recommend this book to almost all readers, and certainly to anyone interested in the middle ages, courtly love, Arthurian legends, or women's literature.

The French Renaissance of the 12th Century.

Before the famous Italian Renaissance, you could speak of a French Renaissance in the 12th century as far as literature is concerned.
In Southern France there were the Troubadours, singers and poets, often part of the nobility or their entourage. In the North of France you had Chretien de Troyes and his Arthurian romances and the Lais of Marie de France, to name only two of the most important.
The 'Roman de la Rose' was written in the 13th cent. but is probably the most important masterwork of the French Renaissance.

About the person of Marie de France almost nothing is known for certain.Her 'Lais' - stories about romance or adventure - are based upon the popular and folkloristic tales that already existed for centuries in Bretagne - a region close to where the Atlantic meets the North-Sea.
These stories were handed down from generation to generation by story tellers.
The Lais of Marie de France excel by diversity. There are love stories - of course - but also vivid descriptions of
tournaments and even a story about a werewolf.
Marie de France proofs that medieval literature can be entertaining.

Courtly Love Critique

Like The Romance of Tristan and Iseult, The Lais of Marie De France offer the reader more than the literal. There is high emphasis placed on the symbolism of animals. There are dead nightingales, weasels that know the secret to new life, a jilted werewolf, and others. The lais and Tristan and Iseult were written during the same time period, as evidenced by the lai entitled "Chevrefoil," which retells one of the closing scenes in The Romance of Tristan and Iseult.
Most of the lais follow the courtly love tradition, but often with a twist of the opposite, especially in "Eliduc." Courtly love challenges the institution of marriage and other social conventions. It examines the problems that arise when people fall in love: selfishness, disloyalty, and violence.
I do fear that there is a lot lost in the English translation. The lais were originally long French poems, but the translation is presented as prose. However, where the music of the language lacks, the consequences of the work remain.

He ends up embarrassing and angering Shawn in front of their fellow officers, which seems as though it will end any hope of Trent having a chance with the young man he can’t push from his mind. Hot First Responders!

Excellent fast paced read. I love firemen and policemen and stories involving them. I like how there was a deeper thread than just the two guys hooking up. It made the story more interesting. It had me guessing throughout the book and that held my interest. I'm reading for the next one in the series!

A good read.

How can I resist a story about a cop and a firefighter? Written by Morticia Knight, this is not the usual read about such men. Yes, there is romance. Yes, there is erotica (really HOT! you guys and gals!!!) and Yes, there is the drama of the suspense of a mystery the men had to help solve: the emergence of a hate-filled cult movement ironically called The Citizens Against Immorality.

Set in Sin City, Trent is a firefighter who had worked hard to get to where he was at now. He was respected, and he was a friend. He was also out and proud. The only thing that marred his reputation was his stoicism. He was a quiet man who never really showed how he felt or what he felt. His best friend from grade school knew him, though and that friend knew Trent was finally able to move on from his grieving. You see, Trent had lost the love of his life no thanks to a senseless crime. As a cop, his lover served and lost his life in the line of duty. Now that Trent was finally able to move on, the only thing in the way was that Shawn Everly was a cop, too.

Shawn had moved from LA because he needed not only to have a less stressful cop life dealing with the gangs of said city, but he also needed to get away from his family who barely tolerated him. Moving to Las Vegas was a decision he had thought about long and hard. Working in this land of lights was not as stressful, but he did have to deal with a lot of groping, women in barely there wear, men glittering gold, and a firefighter who set his blood to boil.

There is angst, there is drama, there is action, mystery and thrill. This is a complete package that reads fast with a high entertainment value. Although Trent did surprise me a bit as the story developed but it was a surprise I really wanted to happen. This man needed to heal and he did it through sheer force of will and facing up to his demons. Loving Shawn was difficult for his fears that this man may be violently taken away from him, just like before, was eating at him. The way both men approached the healing, now that was the part I really loved. There were no miracles happening here, there were no instant gratifications. And that for me, is what makes a good read.

Good Reading

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas where the party never ends and danger lurks around every corner. Enter Officer Shawn Everly, a recent transfer to the LVMPD and assigned to foot patrol along the infamous Strip. When a drunk decides to take a dip in the lake at the Bellagio, Shawn comes face to face with the man he’s been dreaming of for months – fireman Trent Marhsall. Will sparks fly or will the two first responders fizzle out?

Shawn Everly is what I like in a man. He’s stable, he’s gorgeous, and he’s just alpha enough to get things done, but not so alpha that you want to kick him in the shin every time he opens his mouth. Considering he’s a cop, that last bit is a huge surprise. I love that he’s able to take the teasing, harassing, and everything else his partner and coworkers throw at him in stride. It says a lot about his character that he didn’t shoot any of them, especially after the embarrassing incident at the beginning of the story. He’s the exact kind of partner that Trent needs.

Now Trent Marshall, on the other hand, is a bit too alpha for my tastes. However, as you begin to become privy to his backstory, you begin to understand why he acts like he does. His overprotective streak borders on obsessiveness at times and it can be a real turn off. Thankfully, Shawn helps him come to terms with the loss of his former boyfriend, who was also a police officer. Once Shawn begins to cope with that, his domineering attitude loosens up somewhat, making him much more likable.

I will admit that as a local of this odd town, I was looking for inconsistencies or errors and I am happy to report that I didn’t find any. That always impresses me because it’s too easy to choose a city and make it up as you go along, but in this case, I was able to easily picture where Shawn and Trent were at all times. The author obviously did her research and it shows.

All Fired Up is an extremely sexy and sweet story about two first responders who can’t get enough of each other. It’s a very real example of how hard it is to work as either a police officer or fireman and how much harder it is to love someone who is either. It’s a great introduction into a new series and I can’t wait to see what Ms. Knight has in store for us next.

Useful introductory neuroscience

This was the text for a Medical Neuroscience class that was taught by Dr. Len White of Duke University (via Coursera). I found this text to be a very useful adjunct to the course and I can highly recommend it. Of greatest utility for me was the many illustrations as I am a visual learner. Also, there is a related adjunct website with a number of useful illustrations and the book came with the Sylvius neuroanatomy software.

Get the 4th edition

The 5th Edition has updated artwork that contains numerous, critical errors. Two examples:

In the chapter on synaptic plasticity, there is a figure on the property of associativity with a text box that says synapse not strengthened, when it should say strengthened. The 4th edition does not have this error.

In the chapter on upper motor neuron control, the first figure shows that the upper motor neurons from the cortex synapse mainly on the medial horn grey matter, when it should say the lateral grey horn matter. Again, the 4th edition does not have this error.

There are other, smaller errors in figures (transporters showing Na moving in the wrong direction) that are correct in the 4th Edition.

Bottom Line- It's a good text, but every figure you look at you'll be wondering if it's correct or an error. It wastes your time. Get the 4th Edition.

Second book that came in was in better condition. Although I recently started reading the book

The shipping process was a bit of a hassle, as I had to return the first book I received because it was partially damaged on the spine and front cover. Second book that came in was in better condition. Although I recently started reading the book, it is a very informative text so far, repeating important topics from section to section of each chapter as well as providing some great illustrations that help understand structures and topics better. I had read in previous reviews that there are a lot of smaller errors in the text- I just started reading it, so I didn't find any yet. If you buy the book new, it also comes with a few informative websites with a glossary, few animations per chapter, and other material that makes the purchase seem like a bit of a bargain. After all, how often would you find an access card + a new textbook for under $100?

UPDATE 11/4/15
Okay, so this book started to get a bit frustrating as I started going through the chapters for class. For some reason, they seem to explain material in such a verbose way I found myself holding a dictionary near me and looking up those unnecessarily complex words, making learning those concepts longer and more challenging. Other than that, I think the application boxes they provide in each chapter are interesting and well connected to the introduced material

Overshadowed by more flamboyant or tragic Olympics, the 1960 Rome games were a sociopolitical watershed, argues journalist Maraniss (Clemente) in this colorful retrospective. The games showcased Cold War propaganda ploys as the Soviet Union surged past the U.S. in the medal tally. Steroids and amphetamines started seeping into Olympian bloodstreams. The code of genteel amateurism—one weight-lifter was forbidden to accept free cuts from a meat company—began crumbling in the face of lavish Communist athletic subsidies and under-the-table shoe endorsement deals. And civil rights and anticolonialism became conspicuous themes as charismatic black athletes—supercharged sprinter Wilma Rudolph, brash boxing phenom Cassius Clay, barefoot Ethiopian marathoner Abebe Bikila—grabbed the limelight while the IOC sidestepped the apartheid issue. Still, we're talking about the Olympics, and Maraniss can't help wallowing in the classic tropes: personal rivalries, judging squabbles, come-from-behind victories and inspirational backstories of obstacles overcome (Rudolph wins the gold, having hurdled Jim Crow and childhood polio that left her in leg braces). As usual, these Olympic stories don't quite bear up under the mythic symbolism they're weighted with (with the exception perhaps of Abebe Bikila), but Maraniss provides an intelligent context for his evocative reportage. David Maraniss has demonstrated great range throughout his writing career. His latest effort is a timely and, for the most part, a well executed look at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Although the book’s subtitle may be a bit of a reach, Maraniss has much to say about the implications of the Rome Games as a microcosm of the political, financial, and humanitarian forces shaping the world at the time. Only the New York Times Book Review opined that the event’s obscurity today suggests that nothing was, in fact, world-changing about it. Rome 1960 combines the author’s passion for sports with his keen eye for sociopolitical connections to offer a compelling portrait of the “Olympics that changed the world.”

For the Ages

Mr. Maraniss takes us back to the Rome Olympics in 1960. With loving detail he recreates that watershed moment when the Cold War first seriously collided with the sporting world. He reintroduces us to the sporting heroes of a bygone era. Greats like Wilma Rudolph, Ralph Bunch, Abebe Bikila and Rafer Johnson are recognized for their place in history. We meet the young Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali)in all his brash insecurity. This is the moment when drugs first creeps onto the Olympic stage and when amateurism is being questioned. This a fascinating read.

Terrific Reading about the World at a Crossroads - and Glimpses of Sports Superstars, too!

The world is changing so fast right now that most of us can barely keep up with the daily news that affects our lives, jobs and future. So, it's a rare and wonderful treat when a book comes along that carries us back to a time and place when the world changed more slowly - to show us one of those events that truly did change our global culture. When such books come along, they're usually about wars - but not this new gem by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Maraniss.

Given my own background as a journalist, I'll confess that I was puzzled by Maraniss' decision in selecting "Rome 1960" for a thick new book of nearly 500 pages (that's counting all the extras at the end). As I picked up the book, I kept asking myself: Why did he call this particular meet -- "The Olympics that Changed the World"?

As a specialist in religion and culture, I've immersed myself in histories of other Olympics: the 1924 "Chariots of Fire" Olympics, the 1936 Nazi-dominated Olympics, the 1972 Olympics when terrorists killed 11 Israeli athletes - and even the 1964 Tokyo Olympics that were a milestone in global culture in part because of Kon Ichikawa's historic documentary film.

But having read Maraniss' new book, I've got to agree - Rome in 1960 ranks right up there as a milestone in world culture.

I had not considered the roles of the major players who all collided in Rome that year - including the now-infamous anti-Semite and pro-Nazi American czar of the Olympics movement: Avery Brundage. If you don't find yourself drawn to "Sports" - but you are fascinated by 20th-Century history, especially the 1930s, Fascism and the Holocaust - this is a "must read" book for you. Think of it as a "sequel" to books about the controversial Nazi Olympics in which Hitler, Goebbels and Riefenstahl essentially pulled a fast one on Brundage in convincing him to help them celebrate their glorious new Reich.

As a journalist, I'm a longtime follower of new research into that earlier era - and Maraniss picks up the Brundage story in 1960 and pretty much nails the man and his many levels of hypocrisy - and lets us see how this antique figure collided with many of the realities of later-20th-Century culture. Among the key details Maraniss adds to our understanding of Brundage are personal jottings he made during the Rome Olympics that, among other things, complained of the emergence of "Jews ... demanding restitution for everything lost and lot more." (Of course, Brundage somehow managed to continue at the helm through 1972 in Munich, where controversy continued to surround his decisions.)

What's great about this new book is that everything I've said about the Brundage sub-plot is just one of many compelling storylines that Maraniss explores in these 500 pages. Among other things: These were the Olympics in which Cassius Clay exploded onto the global stage, later to transform himself into Muhammad Ali. These were the games of Wilma Rudolph. These were the games in which commercial interests were knocking down old-school barriers that claimed to be preserving an "amateur" tradition. Doping became an issue at Rome. Two Chinas and two Germanys jostled at these games.

This is summer reading at its best. The next Olympic games are looming. The world is no longer merely tilting on its axis. No, global culture now is spinning at a topsy-turvy rate, it seems.

Pick up "Rome 1960." If you're like me, you won't stop until you've read the whole thing - and you'll come away understanding just a little more about how we all got to this place we're standing in this strange new century.

The writer did a excellent job telling about the background of the atheletes who partipated in the games. The story
of Rufus Johnson and Wilma Randolph were excellent examples. I grew up in the 1960's, some of
the things he wrote about I remember. ihave enjoyed all his books.
