A Concise Pentecostal Theology

Contained within this well organized volume is the core of Pentecostal theology and a must read for anyone who seeks to better understand pentecostalism. Each of the sixteen doctrines, supported sufficiently with scripture, is presented within a theological framework . An example of such a framework, for the doctrine The One True God, would be the classical arguements given since medieval days for the existence of God (chapter 2). A nice plus is found at the end of each chapter where the authors have provided study questions to help insure the reader's comprehension of the material. Menzies and Horton have created a work that serves two purposes: first, as a resource for general theological knowledge; and, second, as a specific doctrinal reference for the Assemblies of God. Thus "Bible Doctrines - A Pentecostal Perspective" is an excellent addition to the library of the serious Bible student.

Brief Introduction to the Assemblies of God Doctrines

The Assemblies of God is the world's largest classical Pentecostal denomination in the world with over 40 million members worldwide. It is also the largest missionary movement in history of humanity.
However, all of this has evolved from the Assemblies of God Statement of Fundamental Truths written in 1914 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. This short volume covers those sixteen truths. Each truth is covered in only 4 to 5 pages. But don't let that stop you from reading this book for a brief introduction to the Pentecostal teachings.
Finally, one word about the "saint" and his comments about the Holy Ghost and the Assemblies of God. The Assemblies of God is not a holiness-Pentecostal movement but grew out of mainly ministers from the Baptist, Presbyterian, and Christian & Missionary Alliance churches. The Assemblies of God stance on entire sanctification is one of progressive sanctification from their Baptistic roots. In fact, the only real differences between Southern Baptist and the Assemblies of God is their view on Spirit-Baptism and eternal security. The Assemblies of God is Arminian in its theology but not Wesleyan in many other points of doctrine.

Useful for ministers and laypeople

There are not many books that I read and reread nor reread a third time. However, Bible Doctrines by William Menzies is one of those books. No, it's not necessarily because it contains a riveting story or dialogue. In fact, it can be somewhat theologically dense; but, the book is invaluable. I first read through this book in Bible college as a syllabus requirement. Okay. Fine. I'll read it. I read it through a second time as a prepared for my licensing in the Assemblies of God. I absorbed it more. I understood its importance. I recently completed my third reading as I prepare for ordination. And, honestly, it is exciting. Yes, it's theology and doctrine, but it's founded in Scripture. It offers a concise understanding of the Pentecostal experience.

Throughout the book, Menzies walks us through the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God and offers a more in-depth study as the chapter continues. By the end of the book, you will have a firmer understanding on theological topics such as the authoritative rule, the One True God, the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, the fall of man, the salvation of man, the ordinances of the Church, the baptism in the Holy Spirit, the initial physical evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit, sanctification, the Church and its mission, the ministry, divine healing, the blessed hope, the millennial reign of Christ, the final judgment, and the new heavens and the new earth. You might be exhausted just reading the list, and, yet, Menzies takes these theological issues and breaks them into chewable portions. At the conclusion of the book, a glossary and index are also provided for easier study. I can't recommend this book enough. If you are studying for the ministry, you have to get this. If you are a layperson searching out more information on the Pentecostal perspective, this is the book to pick up.

Authentic Ukrainian designs and stitches

I recently went on a stitch retreat and one of my classes was on Ukrainian stitching. Then I went to my Embroiderers' Guild of America meeting and someone brought up making a project on Ukrainian stitching. Then I found a notebook I'd bought long ago on Ukrainian stitching. Then I found this book for review and here I am.

It's a good book for being somewhat amateurish. It is in plastic comb but the covers are pretty sturdy. It is somewhat deceptive to show the first few pages of designs in color...the front ones are the only ones in color. There are many b&w close-up photos of stitching, including the needles' movement on many stitches. Also many of people in authentic dress and museum pieces. The original names of stitches and pieces are discussed and the ladies even stretched out beyond Ukrain to bring in some hardanger. There is a bibliography of Ukrainian sources and the only book of the West suggested is Th. de dilmont's Encyclopedia of Needlework.

The types of stitches are well laid out and diagrammed. I think I could put this to good use.

It was first printed in his 1943 paper "A Theory of Human Motivation". Maslow subsequently extended the idea to include his observations of humans' innate curiosity. His theories parallel many other theories of human developmental psychology, some of which focus on describing the stages of growth in humans. Maslow described various needs and used the terms "Physiological, Safety, Belongingness and Love, Esteem, Self-Actualization and Self-Transcendence" needs to describe the pattern that human motivations generally move through. Maslow studied what he called exemplary people such as Albert Einstein, Jane Addams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Frederick Douglass rather than mentally ill or neurotic people.

Executive Summary:
This is a review of A Theory of Human Motivation by A.H. Maslow. The target audience of the book are individuals who are looking to expand their understanding of Maslow’s theory of motivation. The book is an in-depth look into Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and how it pertains to the motivation of individuals.

Strengths:
The strengths of the book are that it is written in a way that it can easily be understood by the average person and also that it is well written, without any noticeable grammatical mistakes. In addition, Maslow also uses commonly encountered examples to not only help the reader understand what he is getting at but also to help the individual see how it truly pertains to each individual.

Weaknesses:
The weaknesses of the book are the lack of detail and depth in regards to the testing of the theories; not all individuals are equal when it comes to their motivations and secondly, the layout of the book could be better, the sub-topics seemed to run all together and in my opinion, one column instead of two would allow for larger print

Reviews:
There have been many reviews in approval of this book, while there have only been two reviews in disapproval of this book. One of the disapproved reviews states that this book is not what they expected it to be, and that “it does not have the triangle.” This response must lead others to wonder as to whether this reviewer even read the book, due to the fact that the entire book was based directly in conjunction to the triangle (hierarchy of needs). The triangle itself is on the front cover of the book, however, it is not posted again anywhere else in the book. The triangle instead is written about within the book. It is broken down into each of its sections, in which each section is then given an in-depth review of how and why Maslow came to include that section within his hierarchy of needs. It is definitely easier to agree with another reviewer when he/she states that this book “gives clear reasons and excellent proof for his (Maslow’s) theories.”

Recommendation:
I recommend this book because it is a great insight into how people grow, learn and why they choose to do the things in which they do. This concept can be used to help understand infants, teenagers, adults, criminals, business leaders, entrepreneurs…the list goes on and on.

The book to read for ths serioulsy interested in the individual and what drives him. A group is composition of many individuals with similar drives and goals therefore understanding the severity of the contentious world we live in makes more sense than just the chaos we see. The understanding of such may lead to a solution. If not, we have yet to see the worst of it.

There are no page numbers. The right margins are not justified. The text appears to have been typed, and the font is small. There is some solid information in this book. I would recommend looking at Charles Cosimano's books first, however, to get the basics. He may have put them up on his website, for free download, or so I've heard. The author seems to have not gotten out of first chakra issues, like fighting with others, using his methods. That isn't necessarily bad- one develops methods- however, it's not my focus. Life is about getting out of that, and into the more spiritual levels, at least for me. The book suggests far more than it covers. It is short, though packed with useful information. He does correctly note that a quartz crystal itself is a radionic device, that's not something many realize. The copper wires, potentiometers, etc. are interesting, and fun to play with. Intuition Technology discusses the use of radionic diagrams, which also work. The book is technically good, but I would have to say morally somewhat lacking, rather like Cosimano's works. I have no interest in fighting, myself. The primary psychotronic device is of course consciousness, and devices are crutches, though fun to play with. If you have a serious interest in this, by all means get the book, just understand that it won't give you everything under one cover.

This is a very small book, not very long. It offers very specific practical instructions -- nice --, without getting very much into the how and why of construction -- not so nice --. The author is very focused on magical warfare -- yuck --, so if that's your bag, you might love this book, but I sure don't.

Good stories, but not much practical information

The title refers to the prevalence of a "slash" in people's lives these days - people who instead of seeing themselves as an "accountant", consider themselves an "accountant/musician" or "accountant/designer" or "accountant/parent" or whatever. People with two jobs, basically.

The premise was intriguing to me since I've always considered myself a "slash", if you will. A jack of all trades, a renaissance man, etc. From my very first job I've always done work on the side and have added quite a few "slashes" to my ID over the years, so I was really interested in this book's promise to help you integrate them into a single identity.

What I got was a lot of stories about other people's multiple careers and some generic tidbits like "develop your new career while you're on the job". Lame.

If you want to get inspired by hearing stories of other people who are making money from side interests, go for it. If you're trying to do the same, don't expect any revelations.

Don't waste your money

I have bought this book in order to figure out HOW to make my interests a slash career. Instead, this book is nothing that stories about and resumes of people who have multiple careers. I was hoping the first chapter was just an example, but the whole monotonous book is the same.

Lots of buried treasure here

It's been awhile since I read a book that I wanted to recommend to career and business clients. This one makes the cut

Other authors have attempted to describe what Alboher calls "slash careers," with considerably less success. What makes this book work is the emphasis on realism. Alboher offers numerous examples. We learn about teachers who become real estate agents and fashion models, lawyers who become artists and writers, and at least one banker who does hip-hop.

Because so many stories can be overwhelming, I do not recommend attempting to read the book in a single sitting. Instead, read a little here and there and begin to take notes.

The second part of Alboher's book attempts to be a "how-to," but continues to use stories as examples. I believe Alboher's guidelines are unusually realistic and thoughtful. She covers points that might escape the new slash careerist, such as legal and ethical conflicts of interest, inviting specialists to supplement her knowledge. For example, she asked a workplace specialist to create 10 guidelines for balancing parenting and career. A flextime specialist explains the need to focus on economic reasons for flextime, not just good intentions. And a coach presents an excellent "ask your friends" exercise that would help almost anyone exploring a new field.

I particularly resonated to the section on boundaries between the two careers. In my own case, I still maintain a career consulting website. But I also offer copywriting and website marketing services, based on what I learned from this site. I find my clients don't have a problem, but marketing consultants often become critical and advise me to drop one or the other. Alboher answers the question, "How much to tell?" correctly: "It depends."

Finally, at the end of the book, Alboher presents some examples of resumes, bios and other promotional material. It's important to view these pages as possibilities, not models. Alboher carefully points out that some people have totally different resumes for their careers, while others offer creative combos. Apart from being slash examples, the resumes could be viewed as models of resume-writing. The "Billy Shakes" bio is not to be missed.

So what's not to like?

Well, I couldn't help noting that most (though not all) of Alboher's examplary slashers were on the young side -- rarely over 40, let alone 50 or 60. My clients tend to be mid-career professionals and they'll gain a lot from this book. But they may have trouble seeing themselves in many of the stories.

Second, nearly everyone in this book seemed to fall into a second career by accident and to achieve great success, apparently without effort. There's little sense of planning or decision-making. In contrast, Herminia Ibarra's Working Identity takes readers through struggles of ordinary career changers who conducted research and attempted to create a process. Alboher quotes briefly from Working Identity and I believe these books nicely complement one another.

Toward the end we do hear about a few conflicts, as when a teacher took too many absences to pursue his wrestling career. But surely some people set out to seek a slash, only to find they lack aptitude or interest as they explore further.

These quibbles do not represent fatal flaws. I plan to recommend this book to a few of my current clients as soon as I finish posting this review.
