The Art of Vinyasa: Awakening Body and Mind through the Practice of Ashtanga Yoga, by Richard Freeman, Mary Taylor

A radical presentation of the most rigorous form of contemporary yoga as meditation in motion.

The Art of Vinyasa takes a unique look at Ashtanga yoga as meditation in motion that produces profound inner change. Two of the most well-respected teachers of the Ashtanga style of yoga, Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor, explore this rigorous practice not as a gymnastic feat, but as a meditative form. They reveal that doing the practice--and particularly the vinyasa, or the breath-synchonized movements--in such a deep and focused way allows practitioners to experience a profound awakening of the body and mind. It also develops an adaptable, flexible practice that can last a lifetime.

Freeman and Taylor give an in-depth explanation of form, alignment, and anatomy, and how they work together in the practice. They also present a holistic approach to asana practice that includes an awareness of the subtle breath, and seamlessly merges yoga philosophy with practical technique.

Unlike other books on Ashtanga, The Art of Vinyasa does not follow the linear pattern of the sequences of postures that are the hallmark of Ashtanga yoga. Instead, it interlinks the eight limbs--yama and niyama (ethical practices); asana (postures); pranayama (breathing); pratyahara (nongrasping of the senses); dharana (concentration); dhyana (meditation); and samadhi (harmony, insight)--and shows how to establish an internally rooted yoga practice.

The book will be fully illustrated with fifty halftones by esteemed photographer and cinematographer Robert Muratore, along with thirty illustrations.

Cosmic Consciousness: A Study in the Evolution of the Human Mind, by Richard Maurice Bucke

2010 Reprint of 1905 edition. This work is the magnum opus of Bucke's career, a project that he researched and wrote over many years. In it, Bucke described his own experience, that of contemporaries (most notably Whitman, but also unknown figures like "C.P."), and the experiences and outlook of historical figures including Buddha, Jesus, Paul, Plotinus, Muhammad, Dante, Francis Bacon, and William Blake. Bucke developed a theory involving three stages in the development of consciousness: the simple consciousness of animals; the self-consciousness of the mass of humanity (encompassing reason, imagination, etc.); and cosmic consciousness - an emerging faculty and the next stage of human development. Among the effects of this progression, he believed he detected a lengthy historical trend in which religious conceptions and theologies had become less and less fearful. A classic work.

From the Back Cover
Many of the great spiritual and intellectual achievements throughout history represent mankind's quest for an ultimate state of consciousness. This process of developing expanded consciousness is clearly explained in Cosmic Consciousness, one of the classic books on the mystical experience. Richard Maurice Bucke outlines the development of various intellectual and spiritual faculties in the history of man and how their development mirrors the growth of the individual. Bucke believed that ""the evolution of the individual is necessarily the evolution of the race in an abridged form."" Cosmic Consciousness declares that we are witnessing a continued revolution in enlightenment with people like Buddha, Jesus, Spinoza, and Whitman, to name a few, acting as the forerunners. First published in 1901, Cosmic Consciousness, is an excellent source of information for anyone interested in exploring spiritual development. From simple consciousness, to self-consciousness, and then cosmic consciousness, Bucke provides a work of profound philosophical vision. This classic study occupies a secure place in the archives of written thought.

About the Author
Richard Maurice Bucke was born March 18, 1837, in Methwold, a village on the edge of the Norfolk fens, in England. When he was one year old, his father moved to Canada and Richard was subsequently educated at London Grammar School. He studied medicine at McGill University, graduating in 1862. He continued his studies in England and France, before returning to Canada in 1864 to take up medical practice. In 1876 he became medical superintendent of the insane asylum in Hamilton, Ontario, and in 1878 was medical superintendent of the insane asylum in London, Ontario. Around 1872 Bucke had what became for him a life-changing mystical experience which he called an "intellectual illumination." He spent the next thirty years seeking out other people who had a similar experience and reflecting upon the significance of such altering of consciousness. The literary result of his study, the book Cosmic Consciousness (1901), became a classic work on the subject. He theorized that a higher consciousness was a natural faculty in man at a certain state of development. Bucke passed away after slipping on a step on February 19, 1902, in London, Ontario.

The pioneering book on enlightenment episodes
By OAKSHAMAN
This study is from the early days of the psychiatric profession when its practitioners could still write seriously of spiritual and mystical matters without being ostracised or ridiculed as "unscientific." Briefly, the author personally experienced a sudden episode of enlightenment and rapture that, while it was only of brief duration, changed his outlook on life forever. He spent the rest of his life, he was in his mid-thirties at the time, trying to figure out what had happened to him, and if there were any others.

What he found was that such sudden occurances of enlightenment, these epiphanies, had been occuring to mystics, philosophers, writers, and artists all through recorded history. Not only that, but they were occuring with increased frequency as time went on. Bucke concluded that this marked an evolutionary trend. Carried out to its logical conclusion, he postulated that one day "cosmic consciousness" as he termed it, would be as common in the human race as self consciousness currently is. He based this on the manner in which the ancestors of man slowly climbed from the simple consciousness of animals to an almost universal state of self consciousness.

Having experienced a simular event in my mid-thirties (remember, it happens to varying degrees), I found this book to be immensely personally relevant- as it has proven to be to many of us for over one hundred years now.

Timeless Spirituality with the Authority of Experience
By richardpinneau.com
Although now a century old, Dr. Bucke's volume is timeless because its topic is: the human quest for the experience of The Divine.
Written, not by a theologian but by an experiencer of the Ultimate Mystical Experience, this book describes Bucke's own few seconds of illumination, then goes on to show commonalities among the experiences of the ancient (Lao Tse, Buddha, Christ, Paul, Muhammad, etc.), medieval-renaissance (Dante, Shakespeare, etc.), and modern (Ramakrishna, Whitman, etc). The intellectual credentials of this neurologist cause Bucke's work to stand head-and-shoulders above popular "New Age" mystic reports.
Be sure not to miss Bucke's description of his own experience (humbly buried in introductory notes), and don't get bored by reading his analytical sections on the nature of consciousness. Dive into the excerpts of how writers have struggled through the ages to express their inexpressible experiences of Divine Love, Brahmic Ecstasy, Rapture... variously named in different times and cultures.
Although women are under-represented (naturally, since for millenia they've largely been barred from authorship), some of the most movingly personal experiences are those near the end of the volume by three 19th Century women.
The power of this gem stems from its first-hand reports of enlightenment - with its unpredictable, highly personal expressions. You'll find God experienced here not as an anthropomorphic Jehovah, but as a living Presence; not sterilized by intellectual analysis, but revered in Its humanity-divinity. Most helpfully, Bucke shows the parallels between different saints/illuminati/authors in their experiences and in their ways of describing it.
I tell my students that if they were to be sentenced to live out the rest of their lives on a desert island with only five books: Make this one of the five!

MUCH FOOD FOR THOUGHT
By Peter Uys
This book was one of the first to consider religious illumination from a psychological perspective. It differs from William James's The Varieties of Religious Experience in that many of Bucke's opinions (e.g. his views on socialism) have been refuted by history. In order to judge it objectively, one ought thus to always keep in mind the era in which it was written. The basic point is that the human race is slowly and sporadically - albeit with increasing speed - advancing in consciousness to a higher state that will eventually lift the species above the fear, ignorance and brutality that have plagued mankind throughout history. Bucke's argument - which may be strongly disputed today - is based on analogy. He points out the three phases of consciousness found among living creatures: perception amongst lower animals, receptual consciousness amongst higher animals and the conceptual thinking of human beings which is accompanied by a strong sense of self.

In a very interesting chapter he demonstrates the development of consciousness over the last couple of millennia with reference to mankind's improving ability to distinguish colors. Initially only black and red were differentiated, but what was perceived as "red" has been refined into red, orange, yellow and white and even further. Likewise with "black" which split up into black and blue-green, from which the separate colors blue and green were again discerned:
"The blazing blue of the oriental sky is not mentioned in Homer or the Bible, nor the Rig Veda or Zend Avesta. But in this present century we know not only the seven primitive colors, but literally thousands of different shades and gradations of them."

Bucke argues that new or enhanced senses originate with sporadic manifestations among a minority of human beings and that a new consciousness eventually spreads through the whole population. The new or fourth level of consciousness will enable mankind to perceive the unity of the cosmos and the divine presence inherent in it, liberate humanity from fear and enable the race to perceive that love is the rule and the basis of the universe: this is cosmic consciousness. Bucke predicts that it will ultimately be the norm.

No reader will agree with all the author's points, but some of his great contemporaries like the scientist and philosopher Ouspensky agreed to such an extent that he devoted an entire chapter in his work Tertium Organum to this book. The response of psychologist William James in a letter to Bucke was: "My total reaction on your book, my dear Sir, is that it is an addition to psychology of first rate importance, and that you are a benefactor to us all."

Bucke considers the greatest teachers, artists and religious thinkers by looking at their teaching and what is known about their lives, pointing out the remarkable correspondences. Some of those discussed in detail include Gautama, Jesus, Paul, Plotinus, Mohammed, Dante, St. John of the Cross, Francis Bacon, Jacob Behmen, William Blake, Walt Whitman, Lao Tse, Socrates, Benedict Spinoza, Swedenborg, Emerson, Thoreau and Ramakrishna Paramahansa.

His arguments are persuasive as regards both the comparison of texts and the similarities in the numinous experiences of the individuals. As such, the book also serves as an illuminating study of the nature of the mystical experience that is exactly the same in all the religious traditions.

Bucke concludes that these individuals were the pioneers who had already entered cosmic consciousness and wished to convey its essence to the rest of humanity. They were, however, restricted to use the language of normal consciousness and that is why their revelations appear to be incomplete and even deceptive:

"It would be beyond the power of the self conscious mind to conceive the cosmic conscious world. This being so, the reports made by these spiritual travelers have been not only not understood but misunderstood in an infinite variety of senses, and the essentially similar account given by for example, Paul, Mohammed, Dante, Jesus, Gautama and others, has been looked upon as a variety of accounts, not of the same, but of diverse things. A critical study of all these (seeming) diverse accounts will show that they are more or less unsuccessful attempts to describe the same thing. But because it was out of the power of the original reporter, the seer, to give anything like a full and clear account of what he saw, largely because of the inadequacy of the language belonging to the self conscious mind; because his reporters again (as in the cases of Jesus and Gautama, who did not write), possessing only self consciousness, blurred still further the picture; because translators, possessing only self consciousness and understanding only imperfectly what the teacher wished to convey, still further distorted the record. For all these reasons the important fact of the unity of the teachings of these men has been very generally overlooked; hence the confusion and the so-called mystery; a misunderstanding unavoidable, no doubt, under the circumstances, but which will one day, assuredly, be cleared up."

Cosmic Consciousness deserves its "classic" status and may be appreciated even more when read together with William James' aforementioned work. Other works on religion & spirituality that I have found inspiring or thought-provoking include Bible Mystery and Bible Meaning & The Creative Process in the Individual by Thomas Troward, Religion in the Making by Alfred North Whitehead, Alter Your Life by Emmet Fox, Cracking the Bible Code by Jeffrey Satinover, The Thirteen Petalled Rose by Adin Steinsaltz and One Cosmos Under God by Robert Godwin.

Jillian fights to regain her financial footing and confront her personal insecurities, finding comfort in an unexpected place. Review
"Just when I think a series can't get any better, it does! I planned on just starting the first chapter and then finishing it up in the morning, but I just couldn't put it down. Even though, these are quick, serialized reads, Brown has more character development in one sentence that most authors take chapters to fulfill. I adore this style of writing. It is funny, to the point and brilliant. These books are just made to read on your smart phone. So, now, the wait until we get the next one. I can see these going on and on as more mommies are added into the mix and it will never get old." -- Mary Jacobs, Bookkhounds Reviews "After really enjoying the last two books of the Totandia series, I was very much looking forward to reading the third installment and reading more about the characters I learned to love. I thought that this book showed a lot more raw emotions than the other two books. Josie has created some amazing dialogues that make it really easy for the reader to feel what the characters experience. Ally's character has especially grown on me in this book. She is portrayed so emotionally vulnerable, yet so headstrong when it comes to her career and daughter. I really felt for her when things didn't plan out the way she hoped they would. I wasn't sure how Josie would develop the storyline now that the probationary membership period for the four main characters is over, but by further highlighting that members constantly have to prove that they are worthy of the membership (i.e. by competing to join the Top Mom Committee - and, oh dear, these challenges are hilariously over the top - I love it. She keeps the reader extremely interested in the story." -- Cosmochicklitan.com
"Just when I was running out of some good scandalous reading material, Josie Brown is back and she brings it with even more intensity. Who will stab someone in the back first? Who knows something that the others don't? Who is in for a big shock? All will be answered and there will still be a cliffhanger in the end! It's a real page turner...kind of like having a marathon ofDesperate Housewives or 90210 (but you could replace these with Revenge, Gossip Girl, or a number of other shows involving sex and scandal.) There's an expectation at this point that you've already read the first two books. Josie doesn't give as much back story as other books in a series would do. I don't mind this because that just takes up space and you really SHOULD read this series in order. It's meant for people who are already familiar with the characters and plot lines. Even so, there's an ease to the story where you don't feel like you're missing out if this is the first book you've read. (Kind of like jumping into the middle of a TV show halfway through the series.)" -- Chick Lit Central "I was so excited to dive into this third book in the Onesies series and it did not disappoint! Josie Brown really likes her cliff hangers. With the ending of each season I want to yelp in frustration that the book is over already. I can't wait to get my hands on the final book. These books are entertaining and you can't help but become invested in the lives of this fascinating women." --SimplyStacie.net
"This series keeps going in a ridiculously unreal direction, but for some reason, I love it. The way everyone is involved with everyone else would have the reader believe that San Francisco is a much smaller town than it is...If you're a mom, you'll love Totlandia. If you love soaps, you'll love Totlandia. If you just need a quick escape from your dreary day--you'll love Totlandia. I know the kids & moms in this series are moving past the "Onesies" moniker, but I'd be glad to read stories from the point of view of the moms in the other PHM&T age groups!"- Carrie Ardoin

And as every mom in Pacific Heights knows, you simply cannot cross her. But this year's admissions process is more rigorous than ever, pitting prospective members against each other to prove their mettle. But four of the six candidates vying for the remaining four slots have a secret that would knock them out of the running. Jade is a former stripper and porn actress, who has been absent for most of her son's life. Jillian's husband cleaned out their joint accounts and left her for his pregnant assistant. Ally never even had a husband--just a sperm donor--and she's hiding a high-ranking corporate job. And Lorna fears that her son may have special needs... just the excuse her sister-in-law, Bettina, needs to deny her entry to the club. Can these hopeful moms keep up appearances long enough to outlast the competition? Or will their chances--and their private lives--go up in flames?
IN BOOK 2 OF THE TOTLANDIA SERIES:Five mommies are just one misstep away from entry into the elite Pacific Heights Moms & Tots Club. Everyone has a scandalous secret to hide, but who will be the next to fall?As the club's founder, Bettina, ratchets up the stress level with a series of holiday-themed challenges, the cracks begin to show. Ally's work and home lives collide, threatening to expose all of her secrets. And Lorna's already fraying family ties are torn to shreds by a series of devastating events. With just four spots remaining, will the five remaining ladies turn cutthroat? Or will their newfound friendships be strong enough to help them band together?
IN BOOK 3 OF THE TOTLANDIA SERIES:Spring comes in like a lamb as the exclusive Pacific Heights Moms & Tots Club welcomes its newest members. But that tranquility belies a storm brewing, as new tensions and old rivalries come to a head. The surviving moms are ready to reap the rewards of membership, but none of them counted on club founder, Bettina Connaught Cross, needing a pick-me-up from a bitter betrayal. While lesser women might cry into their pillows, Bettina finds comfort in exerting control over her domain. With Bettina on a rampage, the new Onesies are trying to stay out of sight long enough to deal with their own issues: Lorna wants to tell her family about Dante's autism, but keeping it on her own terms could be difficult when her hippie mom and socialite mother-in-law meet for the first time. Jillian fights to regain her financial footing and confront her own insecurities, finding comfort in an unexpected place. And Ally can't bear the thought of hurting Jade, so she continues to bury her feelings for Brady. But when another desperate housewife stirs the mix, Jade could become a pawn in an even more devious game. It's no ordinary spring in Totlandia, as emotions build to a fury and end with a roar.
IN BOOK 4 OF THE TOTLANDIA SERIES:As summer sizzles in Totlandia, emotions boil over for the newest members of Pacific Heights Moms & Tots Club, whose trust in each other is sorely tempted by Bettina and her club politics. When Jillian's vindictive joke backfires, she learns the true meaning of forgiveness. Jade's betrayal puts her in a dangerous downward spiral with no bottom in sight--until she finds friendship and redemption where she least expects it.Lorna faces the biggest trial in her marriage, and makes an important decision that may end it for good. While Ally may regret the choices made she to get accepted in the club, her exile puts new opportunities in her path, thanks to Brady and his ceaseless desire to win her over--with Barry's help, who is playing his own little game with the Top Moms Committee. But it's Bettina who suffers the ultimate punishment--one that changes her life, and the livelihood of the club, forever.
TOTLANDIA SERIES - THE TWOSIES (BOOKS 5-8)Four weddings. Three babies. Two funerals. One heck of a Twosies year.Welcome back to Totlandia.
IN BOOK 5 OF THE TOTLANDIA SERIES:
When Bettina Cross is faced with having to share the leadership of her beloved Pacific HeightsMoms and Tots Club with her sister-in-law, Lorna Connaught, she plays dirty--only to discover that her actions have aligned her two true enemies: Kimberley Savitch, and Kelly Overton.Bettina's problems are compounded when Daniel Warwick, a Department of Justice prosecutor, wants to use her as bait to trap her soon-to-be ex, Art, into coming home and answering to long list of fraud charges. The fact that Art has scammed most of San Francisco's wealthiest families has Bettina fighting desperately to preserve her most priceless possession: her social standing. When Brady lines up venture capital funding for Life of Pie, Ally must tamp down his gung-ho power ranger tendencies, while at the same time shore up Jillian's insecurities that her pies won't live up to Brady's promises. And now that the once homeless Reggie is teaching the complete works of Shakespeare to UC Berkeley undergrads, Jade struggles with her fear that she's competing for his affections with his younger, more beautiful students. Finally, an unexpected tragedy puts Jillian in the middle of her ex's life again--with consequences that will affect her future and those of her twins--forever. The leaves are falling, and there's a bitter chill in the air--but Mother Nature has nothing to do with it. Blame it on human nature--in this case, Pacific Heights parents behaving badly.

Does not disappoint!
By B.Jo
I've been waiting months for the third installment of Totlandia to come out - once I downloaded it, I devoured it in a matter of hours.

We are treated to even more nitty-gritty drama and deception from the Pacific Heights Mom & Tots club.

I do not want to give any details away... all I will say is that now I will have to wait another tortuous 3 months for the next book to come out. This stuff is better than crack!

50 Shades of Awesome
By Mary Bookhounds
MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

***spoilers if you haven't read the first two***

Especially since this installment gets a little shade-ish

Bettina comes face to face with Kelly and although it has taken her awhile to catch on to her deviousness, she slowly comes to terms with her philandering husband, Art. I think I have met this character in real life. Art gives new dimension to the word slimy. As a financial planner, he relies on Bettina's club to get him new clients and they never say anything their losses since his momzilla wife can ruin a reputation faster than you can count on one hand. Matt and Lorna face the music with their son and his autism after an accident rips open the secret. Eleanor, Matt and Bettina's mother has an inkling about the issue and supports Lorna. She also shocks Bettina by telling her off. YAY Eleanor! I really want to see more of her.

Jade, the stripper with a heart of gold, is pretty clueless for how worldly she is and Brady manages to save her reputation even though everyone except Bettina knows what she used to do, including Art. Jillian, is still struggling with her loser of an ex, is stuck with an even worse divorce lawyer, doesn't really deserve the hand she is dealt. Ally's secret still hasn't come to light even though people are catching on to the fact that she really isn't married. She does come to Jillian's aid and even though it will pay off monetarily for her, she does really just want to help her out.

Just when I think a series can't get any better, it does! Eh, who needs to sleep, anyway?
By Ginger
Yet another installment in the series also known as "You're going to read this cover to cover in one sitting, so either start earlier in the day, or deal with needing lots of caffeine tomorrow." I'm so overly-invested in seeing how things play out for these women. I'm thrilled when the characters get what's coming to them--good or bad, and plenty of them did! I've already read the 4th book at the time of this review, because, well, why wouldn't I have immediately moved into the next installment?

DEADLY QUEST

When a top lieutenant in a notorious ring of human traffickers agrees to turn state’s evidence, Immigration and Customs Enforcement senior agent Sonia Knight believes she’ll finally take down the illegal operation’s devilish mastermind, Xavier Jones. But when an FBI sting on Jones’s criminal enterprise collides with an ICE stakeout, Sonia is enraged: Her informant’s life and her evidence are in grave jeopardy.

FBI agent Dean Hooper has been chasing Jones for years on money-laundering and tax-evasion charges and doesn’t need or want a hot-headed ICE agent second-guessing his every move. When the Bureau is ordered to join forces with ICE, Sonia is just as livid: Her job is to save lives, not money. But their team effort pays off as fierce mutual resentment fades and passion flares–along with risk.

For Jones is just one piece of a depraved puzzle, answering to an even more dangerous predator. Denied his expected prey, this pitiless fiend intends to make Sonia and Dean pay with their own blood.

Chapter One

“They’ll fire you.”

ICE Agent Sonia Knight gave her partner a sideways glance and rolled her eyes. “Not if we succeed.”

Trace shook his head. “I want this bastard as much as you, but we’re walking a very fine line here.”

“We’re so close.”

“We could both end up dead.”

“Our witness has risked everything to give us this information. If Jones gets even a whiff that Vega is turning state’s evidence, he and his pregnant wife are dead.”

“Don’t think it.”

“You know it. He hasn’t checked in for three days, which isn’t like him.”

“Kendra Vega is fine. We checked on her yesterday afternoon.”

“For now. But Vega could be getting spooked. It’s one thing to talk about getting out of the business, but doing it is another story. These people are ruthless. Vega knows it.”

“And you pulled every string and called in every favor to get them into witness protection when he delivers the goods. You can’t do squat for him unless he comes back with the promised intel.”

True, but Sonia feared that Xavier Jones was untouchable. He’d been getting away with trafficking in humans for years because his instincts were sharp and he trusted no one. That one of his top security men came to her three weeks ago to make a deal was a miracle. She wasn’t going to blow it—she wanted Jones in prison and the Vegas safe. That’s why not hearing from Greg Vega for the last three days disturbed her. Where was he? Why hadn’t he checked in?

“I wish we had better information,” Trace said, not for the first time.

They were hiding among the pine trees near Devils Lake, appropriately named considering the son of the devil, Xavier Jones, owned hundreds of acres in the Sierra Nevada foothills abutting the lake. She could see his house with field binoculars, and tonight, like the last two nights, it was dark.

“It will happen this week.”

“This is our third night watching Jones’s place. He’s out of the state, like Vega reported last time he checked in. The kid could be wrong.”

“He’s not.” They’d contacted the Transportation Security Administration. Xavier Jones hadn’t used his passport. He usually traveled by private plane, both retaining a pilot and having a license himself. Tracking small craft was much more difficult, making the last few days even more frustrating. He could be back in northern California now for all they knew.

Sonia had spent long days talking with ten-year-old Andres Zamora just to get him to trust her. He told her everything he remembered about his family’s abduction and his brother’s murder. It all held together, and he had the scars to prove it.

“I should never have run.”

“You did the right thing. Your brother told you to go.”

“I should have stayed to find Maya. She is all I have.”

“Don’t give up on your sister.”

“How could she survive what they do to her? I don’t even know where they took her.”

Sonia didn’t have an answer, because she didn’t know if she could find his sister. Eight days was a long time in the vile underworld, and thirteen-year-old Maya had most likely been sold before she ever set foot in the United States. If she even ended up here. They’d been separated during the journey, and Andres had no idea where they’d been when she’d been taken away. He’d ended up being smuggled in by truck, then boat.

Sonia frowned at Trace. “If you’re worried about a reprimand, I’ll tell them I lied to you like I lied to the rest of the team.” She hadn’t wanted to be dishonest, but she felt as if she had no choice. Her boss wouldn’t have authorized this stakeout on the word of a pint-sized illegal immigrant.

Trace slammed his fist on the ground. “I can’t believe you said that.”

“I’m sorry.” She stared through the binoculars at the dark house. She didn’t want to hurt Trace, but he hadn’t been in the trenches long enough to know how brutal this business was. That the buying and selling of humans was even thought of as a business angered Sonia and kept her focused on the prize: slapping cuffs on Jones and getting him into an interrogation room.

“No you’re not. You think you’re protecting the team, but you’re only hurting yourself. Don’t be the martyr, Sonia. You’re too damn good. I’m a big boy, and I could have told you to fuck off, or told Warner that Vega didn’t give you this intel. I backed you up because I trust your instincts. I just don’t want you to be blinded because—”

Their earpieces came to life.

“Beta Two reporting three vehicles approaching from the west at approximately forty miles per hour, headed toward the residence.”

Beta Two was stationed at the fork, and there were only two private homes off this road, one being a vacation home belonging to a Silicon Valley executive who came up here quarterly.

Adrenaline flushed her system and she was ready to rock and roll. This was what she lived for. It was 0100 with a near-full moon.

“ETA?”

“Ninety seconds to our post.”

“Stand down. Do not engage—Beta Four, circle—”

She was cut off mid-sentence. “They’re Fibbies,” Beta Two said.

“What?”

“Grille lights just went on. Red, white, and blue.”

Sonia slammed her fist against the nearest tree trunk. She watched the road and seconds later red and blue lights flashed intermittently through the trees lining the private road off Lake Amador Drive. She heard someone—it sounded like veteran Joe Nicholson—say, “She’s gonna fuckin’ blow like Mount Vesuvius.”

“Wish I could see it,” his partner replied.

“Wish I were on vacation.”

They were talking about her, and they were right. She had had more problems with the fucking FBI than any other law enforcement agency. And now they’d blown her operation. How did they get wind of the stakeout? Why didn’t they call and find out if anyone was investigating Jones? They acted as if they were the only federal law enforcement in the country. Jones was ICE territory, and Sonia was going to make damn sure the FBI knew it. Innocent children were going to die if they screwed this up.

She watched as three black Suburbans drove onto the wide, circular drive in front of Jones’s towering home, lights flashing, screeching to a halt as if they were in some B movie.

Federal heads were going to roll. Sonia would see to it. Personally.

She issued orders to her team, then turned to Trace. She was about to tell him to stay put, but shut her mouth. He was no longer a rookie, having been with her team for two years. “Ready?”

He nodded. “Don’t be rash.”

“This isn’t the first time the Fibbies have screwed up one of our ops.”

“You don’t have to tell me that, but don’t forget: more flies with honey, right?”

“I don’t want to catch them, I want to swat them.”

She and Trace ran low to the ground toward the residence. They were a good hundred yards or more off, but made it to the rock-strewn edge of the drive through sparse foliage without being seen by the feds. They halted behind a boulder where they could watch the action. Doors opened and at least eight Fibbies oozed from the interior, black bulletproof vests with bold white letters proclaiming their authority: FBI.

Homeland Security trumped the FBI every time, and she’d make sure the idiots who had driven into her stakeout damn well knew it.

They were dressed in black tactical gear, and she pulled her hat from her pocket that identified her as ICE, peeled down the flap on Trace’s back revealing the same acronym, and clipped her badge to her belt. Trace did the same. She motioned to her partner and mouthed “On three.” They emerged from the large, decorative rocks only feet from the nearest agent. If she had been one of the bad guys, she’d have an ideal head shot. Hell, with her weak hand she could have taken out three of them without breaking a sweat. Incompetent jerks. Did they know who they were up against in Xavier Jones?

She strode toward three agents surveying the layout. One black-vested agent tried to stop her, flashing his badge and saying, “Ma’am, we’ll have to ask you to speak with—”

She pointed to her badge, glanced at the name sewn onto his vest. “Who’s in charge, Ivers? Elliott? Richardson?”

“I—”

A black-haired agent approached. Sonia recognized Sam Callahan, Sacramento FBI’s SSA for white-collar crimes. Political bribery and money laundering. What was he doing here when Jones’s crime was far more international—and deadly—in scope? “Callahan. Surprised to see you here.”

“Right back at you, Sonia.” He nodded at Trace. “Anderson.”

She couldn’t hold back her frustration. “You just destroyed nearly two years’ work! Is covert not in your vocabulary? We’re in the middle of a major investigation. Did you just not feel like contacting us?”

Callahan straightened and reddened. “We have a subpoena.”

Another amazing Brennan story
By Jill James
Ms. Brennan hones her skill to a fine edge with Fatal Secrets. From the first pages viewed through the eyes of a victim of human trafficking, Ms. Brennan drags us into a deep, dark world many of us don't know exists in this world.

Sonja Knight is a heroine to cheer on at every intersection of her life. Now an ICE agent, Sonja uses her insider knowledge of the human trafficking world to go after the bad guys and rescue the helpless victims of this vicious crime.

Dean Hooper is with the FBI and when his case meets Sonja's case fireworks explode. Dean is such an honorable and good man you can't help wishing these two work things out and end up together. The action in this story is non-stop and the romance is sweet and hot. Another A++ for Brennan.

One of the best mystery books
By Will o' the Wisp
I have been reading since I was 4 years old and now have a personal library of my favorites, consisting of almost 3,000 books (Heaven only knows what my children will do with them when I have gone to that big library in the sky) and I also have the Kindle 2. I have also compiled a list from Amazon's forums of the greatest mysteries other people have read. So, I don't consider myself a beginner on reading good books.
Allison Brennan is an excellent writer, usually writing trilogies. I have read all her books and am anxiously awaiting the next. I wrote her an email, asking how she comes up with such unusual plots and she was kind enough to send me a long answer. So, with all that said, I would suggest you read her books in the 3-book form as she carries some characters from one book to the next. They are stand-alone books but I would still suggest this. One thing you can readily see is how she improves with each book. However, you should be warned that her books do stand up tall in the genre of THRILLERS. The main antagonist is always scary and extremely clever. The books always have good endings. This one is no exception. All her books are good.

another winner
By Kindle Customer
I always patiently await the release of a new novel by Allison Brennan. And I am never disappointed by her books. She continues to write novels that not only entertain you, but also has a way of making you care about what happens to the people involved.

This novel tackles the issue of human trafficing. Not only for the sex industry but for the illegal sales of humans for work exploitation. The characters are well written, with real issues that will be acknowledged by the reader as the pace of this novel keeps you moving fast forward to its conclusion. Once again Ms. Brennan has written another thriller that just keeps reeling you in until the final page!
