MOST "WINNERS" ARE VERY GOOD--BUT NOT ALL

This anthology contains two dozen short stories by writers who were awarded an "Edgar" for excellence by the Mystery Writers of America between 1948 and 1978--in most cases (a) for their individual stories, but in a few instances either (b) for a book of short stories or (c) for their total body of work up to that time. In the cases where (b) and (c) pertain, Bill Pronzini, the editor, selected one of their stories to include.

In order, the 24 stories are (1) "The Adventure of the Mad Tea Party" by Ellery Queen; (2) "After-Dinner Story" by William Irish (pen name of Cornell Woolrich); (3) "Catfish Story" by Lawrence G. Blochman; (4) "Love Lies Bleeding" by Philip MacDonald; (5) "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl; (6) "The House Party" by Stanley Ellin; (7) "The Blessington Method" by Stanley Ellin; (8) "Over There--Darkness" by William O'Farrell; (9) "The Landlady" by Roald Dahl; (10) "The Sailing Club" by David Ely; (11) "This Will Kill You" by Patrick Quentin (pen name of Richard Wilson Webb and Hugh Callaghan Wheeler); (12) "H as in Homicide" by Lawrence Treat; (13) "The Chosen One" by Rhys Davies; (14) "The Oblong Room" by Edward D. Hoch; (15) "The Man Who Fooled the World" by Warner Law; (16) "Goodbye, Pops" by Joe Gores; (17) "In the Forests of Riga the Beasts Are Very Wild Indeed" by Margery Finn Brown; (18) "Moonlight Gardener" by Robert L. Fish; (19) "The Purple Shroud" by Joyce Harrington; (20) "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs" by Harlan Ellison; (21) "The Jail" by Jesse Hill Ford; (22) "Like a Terrible Scream" by Etta Revesz; (23) "Chance After Chance" by Thomas Walsh; and (24) "The Cloud Benath the Eaves" by Barbara Owens.

There are, I believe, eight different kinds of stories here. The most numerous (12) are "Premise Stories" that are a bit like the game of "Guess what I'm holding in my closed hand"--their premises are usually something unusual if not impossible (for instance, WHAT IF--a killer can get police to destroy the murder weapon? or WHAT IF--a man doesn't know he is dead?), and their "secret" is disclosed at the end. Related to these are Premise Stories that end (a) with the punishment of a character or (b) with a character's pitiful misfortune (one of each). Four more stories are basically Fair Play Puzzle Stories, where readers get to match wits with the detectives and authors; three stories are "Realistic" Stories that present characters' pitiful misfortunes; two are "Realistic" Stories that (a) show a character undergoing a change in personality for the better or (b) reveal WHAT a character's true personality is (one of each); and one story appears to be a "Tour de force" that showcases the awesome writing abilities of the author at the expense of the story itself.

In my judgment, the six best stories are by Margery Finn Brown (whose story contains no crime or detection), Thomas Walsh (who wrote about a alcoholic ex-priest), Warner Law (who whimsically included himself and his family within the story), Robert Fish (who gives readers a chance to solve a mystery that stumps the police), Rhys Davies (whose story presents a Welsh factory worker with a housing problem), and Joyce Harrington (whose story goes a step farther than most readers could guess). The three weakest stories are by Barbara Owens and Roald Dahl (whose endings to "The Cloud Beneath the Eaves" and "The Landlady" are far too easy to guess) and David Ely (whose ending to "The Sailing Club" comes as a fizzling letdown).

Overall, I would give THE EDGAR WINNERS (1980) a solid "B+" grade.

Fabulous

Where to start? Just when you think that Crane might have dropped all the bombshells he is going to; just when you think Sanctuary has dealt with the worst enemy imaginable; just when you think Cyrus has lost enough, we get ... Warlord. And all bets are off.
But for all the battles, the dragons, the titans and Vaste, Cyrus' personal struggle is what comes to the fore in this book - more so than the other volumes. His turmoil is described with as much skill as the many battles which take place.

Be warned - this book may bring a tear or two (or more) to your eyes. It did for me. He gets more like George R R Martin with every book ...

Great series

I love the series, but I HATE that I got sucked into it before the end was written. I find myself worrying about the authors safety! What if something happens to Robert, and we never get to find out the end? Its especially concerning to me with the cliff hanger this book ended on. Mr Crane, please drive safely, wear your seatbelt, and no high risk activities until you finish books 7 and 8. Matter of fact, I am sure I'm not the only reader who would prefer if you wore a DOT approved helmet at all times, to protect that brain of yours until July. After that, you may go skydiving or cross the street without looking as often as you like.

Worth the wait but can't wait for more!

Just prior to buying this book, I reread the first five main books of The Sanctuary Series. This was fortuitous because after reading book 5, I checked Amazon to be delightfully surprised to see this volume had been published. I purchased this and dove in ... deeply! Delightfully, Crane doesn't disappoint. As good as the previous books in the series are, this one is better and, happily, rather long.

The focus here is on Cyrus and the struggles he goes through as the Guildmaster of Sanctuary and the partner of the elf, Vara. The thoughtful introspection is just as well done as the many battles depicted. There are some incredible insights here and a tremendous bombshell dropped at the end.

SPOILER

We lose some long-time friends here, unfortunately. But that's to be expected in this bloody and long struggle against the evils molesting Arkaria, anything less would be stretching believability. We also see a perhaps ally in this struggle. We also discover some powers that the main characters were unaware they had.

All in all this book is just plain fantastic. Robert J. Crane continues to grow his art and the feeling here is that his craft is a great deal like G.R.R. Martin or Robert Jordan. Look forward to the final two books of the series.

A. F. J. Levi is Professor of Electrical Engineering and of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Southern California. He joined USC after working for 10 years at AT&T Bell Labs, New Jersey. Professor Levi is the author of the book Applied Quantum Mechanics, Second Edition (Cambridge University Press, 2006).

A window to the world of quantum mechanics for the engineer... but not completely self-contained

There is no shortage of quantum mechanics text to choose from. And if I had solely relied on the majority recommendations for an introductory text, I would have certainly missed this gem.

The author is very successful presenting the recondite fundamentals of quantum mechanics in a manner accessible to material scientists and engineers. This is accomplished without losing the rigor necessary to build a strong foundation. Applications of concepts are dispersed through out the chapters and keep the reader's attention.

But by the far the best selling point of this book are the worked problems at the end of the chapters. It is my personal opinion that if a textbook fails to at least provide final answers and solution hints to presented exercises, it is not really a textbook, but a reference reserved for those who have been adequately exposed to the material before. Here all end of the chapter questions are accompanied with worked solutions. This is a rarity among all undergrad or graduate science or engineering texts. This alone makes it valuable for self-study.

To those completely uninitiated to quantum mechanics, I do not recommend this book as a sole source because it is not sufficiently self-contained. It would be best to complement it with "Introduction to Applied Quantum and Statistical Mechanics" by Hagelstein. I have yet to read "Applied Quantum Mechanics" by Kroemer, which has recieved much praise and appears to be another excellent introductory source.

stresses important practical cases

Levi's book differs from standard QM texts, in furnishing more of an applied bent. Directed towards those students in applied physics, materials science and engineering. For example, there is a superb chapter on electron propagation in crystals. Where we see how to describe propagation by transmission matrices. And how energy bands arise due to the periodicity of the potential seen by electrons. Of course, solid state texts also discuss this. But the treatment here of such ideas as tunnelling, and using the WKB approximation to describe that tunnelling in a semiquantitative manner, is clear and detailed. Plus, the examples focus on important heterostructures, where band gap engineering is important.

For semiconductor lasers, there is a similar treatment. With comparisons amongst the common types of laser diodes, like GaAs and InGaAsP.

The numerous problems and the copiously worked out examples are also a nice feature of the text.
