In this course Heidegger continues the task he enunciated in Being and Time as the problem of dismantling the history of ontology, using temporality as a clue. Within this context the relation between philosophy, ontology, and fundamental ontology is shown to be rooted in the genesis of the modern mathematical sciences. Heidegger demonstrates that objectification of beings as beings is inseparable from knowledge a priori, the central problem of Kant's Critique. About the Author

Parvis Emad is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at DePaul University and the founding co-editor (with Kenneth Maly) of Heidegger Studies. Also with Maly, he has translated Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit by Martin Heidegger and Encounters and Dialogues with Martin Heidegger by Heinrich Wiegand Petzet.

Kenneth Maly is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and co-editor (with John Sallis) of Heraclitean Fragments. With Parvis Emad he is currently translating Beitr�ge zur Philosophie (Vom Ereignis) by Martin Heidegger.

Kantbuch before the fact

A lecture course that eventually became the famous Kantbuch, Heidegger demonstrates his remarkable capacity to think in complete sentences. The reading of Kant is decidedly Aristotlizing, with the priority of the imagination (phantasia) over reason (nous) or sense (aisthesis), and the priority of imagination cannot be separated from the priority of time, the gift which is self giving (or in Kant, self-affection: masturbation). The most clever thing that H does, and which he refrains from in the Kantbuch, is to turn the categories (quantity, quality, modality, and something else) into emanations of past, present, future. H reads modern philosophy as the triumph of the imagination, and that is no clearer than in Kant, but for Heidegger, the future possesses a priority, and the future is "image-poor." The connection of imagination with manipulation (and potentiality) leads some (like Sartre) to identify imagination with negativity, but H wants no part of this "humanism." Imagination and time may possess a priority that Kant "recoils" from, but H demonstrates the reductio in Kant's argument not to valorize imagination but ironically to resuscitate aisthesis, or the potentia passiva, the ability or power to receive, to listen intently, or just to listen.

If you've read Garner's stuff, you'll notice some overlap. This book restated "The Winning Brief" multiple times, and it has most of the same examples (Demand Letters, Memos, etc.) as "The Redbook 2d" (I don't have the 3d of that one).

That's the disclaimer. But I still loved the book. It's largely written as a how-to, gives you tips to improve your legal writing, and is a resource that I'll continue to reference throughout my career.

If you'd like a quick read (with accompanying exercises to test your skill) this is a great book to have. Then, when you become more interested, you can nab the Redbook, Legal Usage dictionaries, etc. In sum, it's a great place to start.

One objection, though: Garner's answers in the back often deal with only the Easy exercise, not all three (Easy, Intermediate, Hard). I realize that giving answers to all three would lengthen the book, but the easy one is exactly that--easy. I'd like to see his Heller brief, or any of the harder ones just to compare. But that's only a minor annoyance. Otherwise, it's a real asset if you're interested in improving your legal writing. And you should be.

Who knew?

This book was purchased for a tax research class. It absolutely delivers on its title, more than I even could have imagined. I was immediately impressed by the author's matter-of-fact yet engaging style, and the content is quite useful for non-legal professionals too. If you ever write persuasive letters, articles or blog posts, there are many practical tips in this book. It is an entertaining and thought provoking read. After most sections, I was left scratching my head with a puzzled look on my face. Not questioning the author's ideas, I was instead left wondering why they were not more mainstream, legal and otherwise. I really hope many more people, even those who only occasionally write, read this book!

Let's be clear about what this is

If you're looking for a text to substitute for a Pre-Law English course, this might be its best application. If you're a professor or English instructor looking for a great text to teach Pre-Law English, it's worth a look. It could also be good for someone already in the law field who has been writing "Legalese" and needs to learn a better way. This book can teach how to distill the core of a matter and how to change unclear thought into something coherent and succinct.

Amazon's rating system is, unfortunately, about how well I liked it, not how useful it might be to others. To be fair (which is why I gave it a 3 instead of a 2), I have an MA in English Rhetoric and have spent my life in the writing/publishing world, so it does not fit my needs. I'm new to the field of law and hoped it would teach me the required elements of various briefs/documents. Out of a 240 page book, about 50 pages is devoted to what I sought (Appendix B - Four Model Documents on drafting an Appellate Brief, Motion, Contract, and a Research Memo). Appendix A is "How to Punctuate" which, ostensibly, if you're over 30, you learned in school somewhere along the line.

The remainder of a book is simply an advanced writing course with examples drawn from legal documents. A typical example would be that you are given a convoluted sentence which you then have to break into smaller, more succinct and understandable sentences. The advanced form of that same exercise is a convoluted paragraph in which you have to figure out what is being said and rewrite it to make it more clear and coherent. Other exercises involve interviewing lawyers and judges to find out their preferences in what they like to read as far as legal documents are concerned. The book also assumes you have access to a law library and lots of time to research. One example is: "Find a judicial opinion that takes several paragraphs before getting to the point."

Be more diligent than I was -- take a look at the Table of Contents from the "Look Inside" link, and even download a sample of it to your Kindle before purchasing. Apparently I simply looked at the reviews.

Maia makes us truly believe in David’s descent into sissy submission

You can really tell when an author is enjoying herself, and when she truly shares the fantasy that she’s put upon the page. There’s a passion to those kinds of stories, and an attention to detail that shines through every erotic, humiliating moment. ‘The Photographer’ is one of those books, with a set-up that Maia Anne Fisher describes as “such a delicious scenario” she just had to write it.

Female domination, forced feminization, bondage, chastity, corporal punishment, pegging, and sissy maid slavery – it’s all here, and it’s all intricately tied together in a delicious package. While some authors cheat or cut corners by ‘revealing’ a character had feminine desires all along, Fisher goes for a complete breaking and conditioning, making us truly believe in David’s descent into sissy submission. Through her words, we experience David’s transformation from embarrassment and shame, to pride and pleasure. What’s more, she rewards the reader with a happily-ever-after ending that will leave you longing for the caress of a collar, the bite of a chastity device, and the fullness of sissy penetration.

A bloke down on his luck , almost pennyless , meets a woman photoghapher in a bar . They include the facts about the emergence of 'Lean' - as told by the man who was there making it happen. There is no further need to rely on the multitude of hearsay versions. Of high interest is the essay shedding clarity into why 2014 is the 100th anniversary of true 'Lean' which began in Highland Park MI. He provides the facts from which he bestows on that first site as the true "Temple of Lean' - much of which can be found today in the world-leading Toyota Production System. Good book to understand the basics and Excellent opportunity to learn from experts experience

The experience shared in this book is invaluable and i have gained lot of knowledge. The examples about Lean implementation in TVS Group (Brakes India) and Wabco-TVS is an eye opener. It shows clearly that Leadership vision and employee engagement is paramount for successful Lean implementation in any geography. Do not try to get into the trap of implementation...study yourself and adapt it to your condition...Thats how TVS group is successful...
A Must read for all Leadership....Deming's philosophy of "System Thinking of profound knowledge" holds true still...Leader who have not practiced and experimented himself (Servant Leadership) cannot able to implement or sustain Lean...

Yes, this is a great reference for managers whose responsibility is to help identify and solve problems,
it provides enough thought provoking ideas that help in asking the right questions. and learning to look for value & waste
the learnings can be used at any industry or sector and is not for manafacturing alone.
I have used the knowledge to help coach other members when i go to the Gemba, thanks a lot
