Cool Techniques For Striking Rapport

What I like about this book is, it teaches me how to handle interviews with the right eye contact and makes me understand what messages I am conveying with the way I look at someone else in the eye. It's amazing how a simple eye contact can indicate the level of confidence you have within yourself or helps you to strike rapport with another person. This is pretty relevant in our lives, be it in our daily interactions with our friends, colleagues, interviewers, superiors and even any strangers on the street!

This might be a good book for someone who is not confident, shy or a complete introvert. I think most people have been on the receiving end of a "if looks could kill" stare or a look of seduction. People these days have their noses stuck in a phone all the time and may have lost the skills of actually looking at another person. That, in itself, is worth the read.

Comprehensive overview of Islamic Philosophy

Unfortunately in the West, even with a lot of first-class scholarship now going on to recover the thought of various periods in the history of both Western and Eastern Philosophy, the course of Philosophy in the Muslim world is relatively unknown. This book, edited by Seyyed Hussein Nasr, gives an excellent and comprehensive history of Philosophy as it has meandered through 14 centuries of Islamic intellectual thought and religious belief.

Anyone who reads this book will quickly realise much of the garbage being said about Islam today as always being a deeply backward part of world civilisation whose essential basis is wars of conquest and terrorism is utter nonsense. Jihadi terrorism itself has its roots in the thoughts of the Egyptian radical thinker and writer Seyyd Qutb, who was disgusted at the excesses of 1950's America, and also to an extent also in the thought of Ayotallah Homeni, the Iranian philosopher and theologian who was deeply influenced by thinkers such as Ibn-Arabi. Yet while these thinkers are important, they only form a small part of the overall very rich tapestry of Islamic philosophical thought, which ranges from schools which followed Aristotle and Plato to mystical schools like those of Ibn-Arabi and Shawradi, and schools which closely examined what would now be called the philosophy of law and politics. Islamic thought also contains a rich tradition in the Philosophy of Religion, which asked questions about what Holy Scripture means and how it is to be interpreted, what can and cannot be said about God, how humans can know God, and so on. Also interesting are Islamic examinations of epistemology, science, and metaphysics, which often contains a range and depth of sophistication equalling that of that found in other world civilisations.

This book is worth reading by any serious student of Philosophy interested to see how humans in another mode of civilisation have attempted to answer the basic questions which seem to puzzle human beings anywhere in the world.

Well Destailed explanantion of the aftermath of communism and the role of Kosovo and Albania

For Americans many found just as they did with Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia confusion when it came to sorting out who was who and their role in the breakup and war in Yugoslavia - this book provides an excellent explanation of who the Albanians are in Kosovo and who they are in Albania and the relationships they have. It also provides an excellent understanding of the different political and military groups that have played a significant role in shaping the path of this region. For a country that was very closed to the West this book provides and excellent detailed account of actions leading to a new open Albania and the influence on the current questions of independence for Kosovo.

Albania's recent entry into NATO makes the reading of The Albanian Question a necessity if you want to understand Albania, Kosova and the Balkans. From the economic riots that almost destroyed Albania in 1997, through the NATO bombing of Serbia, and up to the Ramboulillet peace talks, James Pettifer and Miranda Vickers sweep the reader along with their deep, uncanny knowledge of Albania and the Balkans, and with their sharp writing skills. I cannot say enough about the importance of this book. It belongs on the desk of any serious student of the Balkans.

Most Americans believe the War Between the States was over slavery. They have to an enormous degree been miseducated. The means and timing of handling the slavery question were at issue, although not in the overly simplified moral sense that lives in postwar and modern literature.

Sectional differences between the North and the South were distinct long before the former British colonies came together to form a "more perfect union." Money and industry tended to gravitate toward the North, while the agrarian South was dependent upon the soil. Crops required a large labor force, and in the American South in the mid-1800s, that meant slavery-the great unsettled question left over from the founding of the country and the framers of the Constitution. The increasing cost of maintaining a slave population almost eliminated the peculiar institution. Short-staple or "green" cotton was almost too expensive to harvest by the time a visitor from the North designed a machine that could separate cotton fibers from seeds, thus cutting costs and making slavery economically feasible.

Eli Whitney's cotton gin allowed upland cotton to be planted and harvested in ever-increasing quantities. Once the gin was available, cotton and slavery expanded together at an incredibly fast rate.

At least as early as the Jacksonian-era it was clear that while the new United States shared a weak central government, it was constituted of two separate cultures. With the influence of abolitionists growing rapidly in the North, the Congress in Washington D.C. engaged in a series of delicate balancing acts. Each new compromise was intended to settle forever the North-South quarrel between free states and slave states, but none did.

Many in the Cotton Belt were confident that the region's world monopoly would last indefinitely, and this attitude was the seedbed in which the dreams of secession and independence flourished. In the North, alarm at the rapid expansion of the slave population was at least as dynamic a factor as was the humanitarian movement for abolition.

Another bone of contention was the Morrill Tariff Bill. In May, 1860, the U.S. Congress passed the bill (named for Republican Congressman and steel manufacturer, Justin S. Morrill of Vermont) raising the average tariff from about 15% to 37% with increases to 47% within three years. Although this was remarkably reminiscent of the Tariffs of Abomination which had led in 1832 to a constitutional crisis and threats of secession and armed force, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill 105 to 64. Out of 40 Southern congressmen; only one from Tennessee voted for it.

U.S. tariff revenues already fell disproportionately on the South, accounting for 87% of the total. While the tariff protected Northern industrial interests, it raised the cost of living and commerce in the South substantially. It also reduced the trade value of their agricultural exports to Europe. These combined to place a severe economic hardship on many Southern states. Even more galling was that 80% or more of these tax revenues were expended on Northern public works and industrial subsidies, thus further enriching the North at the expense of the South.

In the 1860 election, Lincoln, a former Whig and great admirer of Henry Clay, campaigned for the highly protective tariff provisions of the Morrill Tariff, which had also been incorporated into the Republican Party platform. Lincoln further endorsed the Morrill Tariff and its concepts in his first inaugural speech and signed the act into law a few days after taking office in March, 1861. Southern leaders had seen it coming but their protests had been to no avail. Now the South was inflamed with righteous indignation, and Southern leaders began to call for secession.

How to handle the slavery question was an underlting tension between the North and South, but one of many tensions. It can't be said to be the sole cause of the war. Five years after the end of the war, prominent Northern abolitionist, attorney, and legal scholar, Lysander Spooner, put it this way: "All those cries of having 'abolished slavery,' of having 'saved the country,' of having 'preserved the Union,' of establishing a 'government of consent,' and of 'maintaining the national honor' are all gross, shameless, transparent cheats-so transparent that they ought to deceive no one."

A History That Puts Today's Politics In Perspective

This is an excellent book that focuses on the decades leading up to the Civil War. I found this historical analysis far more enlightening than books that describe specific battles at great length, though I admit this is comparing apples and peaches. It is a very well written, detailed, and authoritative history that will help you appreciate the political, financial, and cultural conflicts between the sections and how those conflicts led to war. It is interesting and frightening how similar the intense animosities and caustic rhetoric of those years is to our current political climate. Perhaps a deeper understanding of this period will help us negotiate our current politics more skillfully.

As a Research Reference

Bassett tells the story of Shakespeare's life through the eyes of a fictional boyhood friend, Toby. Toby stays with Shakespeare throughout his whole life and outlives him. Toby is Bassett's device to be able to introduce some personalized elements into what otherwise would be a boring story for most kids. In reality not that much is known about Shakespeare! There are even a whole 14 years of his life that are "lost", where he falls from sight in the historical record.

Though the book is partly fictionalized it still provides good research material for a class unit about Elizabethan England. The backdrop of evolving political change is discussed (Shakespeare's wife, Anne Hathaway, is represented as a Puritan, and Shakespeare's plays were presented to two monarchs of England), the many appearances of the Plague and short life spans in general, the danger of fire, the British love of theatrical entertainment, and the ability of a few to become star actors (and rich) are among the many themes touched upon. The book is accessible to readers with a 700 headword count, for example, classes/students whose vocabulary is not so advanced such as non-native English speakers or younger students.

Together with other sources, this book is useful in sparking interest in the era in which Shakespeare lived and wrote.

ASIDE: Bassett sticks mostly to the facts, but the facts are not many! She does not hint at the debate over the true authorship of Shakespeare's plays. To spark this debate, I can suggest including another book, _Shakespeare's Secret_ by Elise Broach, a contemporary fiction story about a stolen diamond that supposedly traces back several hundred years to Anne Boleyn, mother of Queen Elizabeth I. The protagonist is named after Hero, the beautiful young daughter of Leonato, in Shakespeare's _Much Ado About Nothing_. The name alone, "Hero" for a girl, causes whispers and a flurry of questions in a group of sixth graders!
