Will, the main character wasn't developed enough. It's hard to relate to him. Too many details and moving parts without apt explanation. Good enough to read thru and be curious about the next book. But, I'm taking a break to read something else. Lyra seemed to change to some obidient child radically different from what she was before; a wild, adventurous, rule breaking, and raucous leader of all that she encountered. The specters are very similar to death eaters in Harry Potter. As the author's intent not all the questions are answered. So, in itself, not a very satisfying wholesome read. But, everything may come together in the end.

An ambitious, imaginative and refreshingly original story

The second book of a fantasy trilogy can be by far the slowest. Surprises about the new world have largely been told. We've met most of the characters, and they've left their world of comfort behind for a more dangerous quest. The third book is the final, ultimate confrontation. But the second is often a kind of travelogue with a few obstacles thrown in to hold our interest while the characters get from here to there.

Not so with The Subtle Knife. While The Golden Compass introduced us to a fascinating alternate world with many imaginative characters, Mr. Pullman's bag of tricks is by no means exhausted. In this second book, we learn there are an infinite number of parallel worlds, including our own. He introduces us to many more creative characters, like the spectral beings that eat people's souls and the various levels of good and bad angels. And all of these are connected by a common thread, though known by different names in each world--the mysterious dust, dark matter etc., the source of what makes us who we are.

In addition to the flawed but charming Lyra, we get a second protagonist, Will, a troubled boy from our own world. Together they go on a more complex quest, during which their relationship is deepened by their shared trials and personal tragedies.

This book is richer in plot than the first, more multi-layered and probably better written.(I'm still not a fan of his omniscient, head hopping style, but he has some beautiful turns of a phrase).

All and all, it's a better book than the first, which tended to be more of a children's fantasy (Gyptians and armored bears and witches, oh my!). It is, however, much darker, moving further from what anyone would call a children's book. Yes, it can be read on multiple levels, but The Wizard of OZ, it ain't.

It's difficult to review this trilogy without commenting on the often discussed controversy about Mr. Pullman's anti-religious views. I was led to expect the opposite of C.S. Lewis' Space trilogy (Out of the Silent Planet, Peralandra, That Hideous Strength), which devolved from a darn good space travel story to an outright religious diatribe. I keep looking for that aspect to rear its ugly head. Though I take no position on his point of view, I'm deeply offended by a writer who is so self-righteous that he spoils a good story by sticking a soap box smack in the middle, climbing upon it and preaching. I have to say there was no sign of this in The Subtle Knife.

The Subtle Knife is an ambitious, imaginative and refreshingly original story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

This book expands positively on the 1st book in almost every way. Such a fantastic plot and introduction of new characters, in particular Will who is in every way as compelling as Lyra. The pace is brisk, the writing is fantastic, and listening to it on audible is a joy. I can't recommend this book enough.

Brian Mossop was a French-to-English translator, reviser and trainer at the Canadian Government's Translation Bureau for forty years. Let your Kingdom come on Earth - As it is in Heaven, Lord! If your prayer is 2 Chronicles 7:14 - "If my people would humble themselves and pray...and I will HEAL THEIR LAND", then this book is a must read!!! What DOES healing the land encompass? Does the land mourn over sin? What are the blessings that come to the land when it is healed? Alistair has done a great job teaching on this and I recommend buying several copies of this book to share with others. God truly does want to bring restoration to the people AND the land!A++++++~~~~~

A Great Approach to the disciplines involved in the study of theology!

I really appreciate the work. I was teaching through Wayne Grudem's "Systematic Theology" when I noticed the footnotes mentioned about this book. The approach made me an instant student of the history of theology and the church fathers. Whereas previously, I was not interested in, nor had the time needed to try to search out what has been said in history on these various subjects. These authors gave me a great foundation in learning to use these various disciplines to do theology.

Excellent but lacks philosophical depth

I am writing another review, as I have continued to develop myself "intellectually" over the years. I think that this book is still great because of its very good historical overviews, presentations & evaluation of many views (incl. liberal, Eastern, etc.), its strong Biblical scholarship, its attempts at relating the ideas to modern situations, etc... However I have come to see the book's major weakness. The Biblical topics deal with many philosophical issues, although not presented in the Bible in a philosophical way. Systematizing, analyzing these issues is even more philosophical (Greek), and in this perspective the authors are way too simplistic, the treatement of the topics too often very naively neglects the philosophical perspective that is necessary for understanding, solving many questions. I still very much recommend this book, but I want to say that it is certainly not sufficient for a real analysis, understanding and for giving answers that are sound enough. I think that this book would be well complemented by St Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica, the deepest and biggest Christian work ever written. However, the Summa is an ancient text that itself requires a lot of study, time and devotion. So alternative recommendation I can make as a completement is Wolfhart Pannenberg's 3 volumes Systematic Theology. Pannenberg is a German (Lutheran) theologian, (and not liberal in comparison with many German theologians), and yet the world's leading theologian. His huge 3 volume systematic theology has a deep philosophical perspective. Pannenberg's work is clearly more academic, difficult than Lewis's present work, yet definetely more accessible than Aquinas' work for those who are not read in philosophy.
