There may be some question as to whether German Chancellor von Bismarck fits as neatly into the A Wicked History series as fellow entrants Adolf Hitler and Attila the Hun. Heuston examines that very question at the book's conclusion and makes a good case for his presence. But readers will have plenty of opportunity to make up their own minds as they read through this concise yet effective book. From his youthful inability to settle down and find his place in the world, through his ruthless governmental career, and then to his final days, during which he might have seen a glimmer of the dark side of his policies, von Bismarck comes across as a complex character, solid in his own judgment. Like other books in this series, this doesn't sensationalize but offers a highly readable introduction to the man and the era in which he acted. The appealing format, with its eye-catching cover and interesting interior art, has much to recommend it, and works well with the thoughtful text. Grades 5-8. --Ilene Cooper

This is a good book, but this is not the book you are looking for if you already know who Bismark was, but I was new on Bismark and I found it informative and fun. I highly recommend it for kids and adults who want to learn about Bismark.

Horse Bleep !

A horrible book. Incredibly biased against its' subject. Reads as if it were written about 1915 by one of the Allied propaganda ministries. Should be called "Idiot History" instead of "Wicked History". An utterly worthless source of information about Bismarck.

Clear and simple

Otto Von Bismark was known for his his clear and simple statement. I think that this book can be very helpful to start someone's introduction with the history of Germany of the 19th century. The book provides you with some tiny detail and anecdotes that make history interesting and "human like".
