About the Author
William A. McEachern began teaching large sections of economic principles shortly after joining the University of Connecticut, and a several years later he began offering teaching workshops around the country. The University of Connecticut Alumni Association conferred on him its Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award in 2000. He earlier won the Association's award for Distinguished Public Service. Professor McEachern has published books and monographs on public finance, public policy, and industrial organization. His research has also appeared in edited volumes, such as READINGS IN PUBLIC CHOICE ECONOMICS (University of Michigan Press), INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK ON TEACHING AND LEARNING ECONOMICS (Edward Elgar Publishing), and RETHINKING ECONOMIC PRINCIPLES (Irwin Publishing), and in a variety of refereed journals, including ECONOMIC INQUIRY, NATIONAL TAX JOURNAL, QUARTERLY REVIEW OF ECONOMIC AND BUSINESS, JOURNAL OF INDUSTRIAL ECONOMICS, KYKLOS, ECON JOURNAL WATCH, and PUBLIC CHOICE. He is the founding editor of THE TEACHING ECONOMIST, a newsletter that for more than two decades has focused on teaching economics at the college level. excellent textbook - won't buy it from amazon again

This is a text book that had to have. I do like the format, the review pages, and the low cost. However, I won't buy a textbook from Amazon again. It took almost three full weeks to get it on the FREE super saver (5-8 days shipping). They don't tell you that they don't have the book and it may take another 5-8 days before they get it so they can ship it to you. I lamost flunked out of the class waiting for the book.

Five Stars!

I received the book right on time. It was packaged fairly decently. The book itself is readable. The chapters get right to the point. It's written in plain English with no hard to understand terms and definitions. The pull out cards are a great reference tool and sum up the chapters nicely. Five stars!

Good text

This textbook is good for learning microeconomics on your own. I used it for an Internet class, and I did fine. The textbook is not complicated, but I am a mechanical engineering student, so it could be my experience with math and physics texts that affects this. My class only covered to chapter 17, so I can't write about the rest of the chapters; they are probably good as well.

This book provides an introduction to economics, an intro. to the market system, it covers the market structure and pricing (monopolies, perfect competition, etc.), resource markets, market failure and public policy, and international microeconomics.

The book also comes with note cards for each chapter. New textbooks (or used if the access code was not used I think) also provide Internet extras like quizzes and videos.

The one thing I did not like was the many and sometimes too large pictures. It seemed as a way to keep your attention on the book, but students reading this material should be mature enough to not require such things. It reminded me of a high school or middle school textbook; not the material, but the pictures.

But as I said, this is a good text.

The finest book to date on Bultering and Household Management

While I have not finished reading this wonderful tome, I can unequivocally state that it is by far the most complete, up to date and informative book of its kind. I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. MacPherson speak at a meeting of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Domestic Estate Managers Association in the fall of 2011. He was witty, informative and completely charming, he translates his personality very well to his book.
All who wish to know how to plan dinner parties, choose the correct vendor, lay a table, open a bottle of champagne, use proper etiquette with guests simply must read this book. Mr. MacPherson covers the art of housekeeping very well. I am most grateful that Mr. MacPherson shares credit with Mr.Robert Roberts, a butler of the 18th and 19th century, Mrs. Isabella Beeton, the first professional housekeeper and Mr. Charles Pierce, a 18th century household manager. History abounds in the Butler Speaks; Turning the table, menu cards, seating boards,the correct usage of cutlery and many more knowledgeable facts.

Most of all, I am grateful that Mr. MacPherson lends credence and recognition to my mentor, the late Mr. Ivor Spencer, who single-handed revived the art of bultering by inaugurating the very first butler school in the world in Great Britain.
I say to all who read this review, that Mr. MacPherson is worthy of being the heir to Mr. Spencer's legacy.

This is a purchase well worth the price, for one cannot put a price on knowledge.

Taking the stuffiness out of etiquette and service

First and foremost, this is not a "tell-all" book, disclosing the secrets of the high net worth families like the fictional accounts described in "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. Instead, this is a guide to entertaining, etiquette and good housekeeping. What makes the book really stand out is that it makes these arts relevant in today's 21st Century modern home, not just the formal households of the ultra-rich from the Victorian or Edwardian eras.

The book does cover in detail the specifics of housekeeping and entertaining, such as the proper way to iron a shirt or how to carve a standing rib roast in front of a table of hungry dinner guests. The instructions are easy-to-follow, accompanied by to-the-point graphics. The writing is direct, but not as a boring text book. It flows well, and held my interest even though I am probably one of the worst housekeepers in the world. Fortunately, I learned a lot of new techniques that make cleaning more thorough without taking tons of extra time.

One of the most beneficial parts of the book is the modern etiquette lessons. In particular, specifics of business etiquette are critical, from presenting business cards to how to behave during a business lunch.

As MacPherson states in the book, "Etiquette is not a set of classical rules for the rich, famous or snobby - rather, it's a way of understanding other people and having consideration for their needs." In this way, we all need an etiquette lesson, and MacPherson does an excellent job of teaching this perspective.

Easy to Read and VERY Insightful!

When I set out on the long arduous journey to Amazon.com to buy this book, I have to admit that I was bit leery. Technical books can be very dry, and a bit tough to follow for me. I absorb much better hands on and find it difficult to focus if the written word doesn’t grab me. However Mr. MacPherson puts some very interesting, insightful and valuable knowledge in one quick and easy read. Making it less of a technical book and more of a nice stroll through the basics of our profession.

In order to provide the epitome of service in these modern times we need to know were it all started. Mr. MacPherson seamlessly incorporates history with modern technique, laying out the foundation any private service professional should have in a light, easy to read format.

He wastes no time in giving little tidbits of knowledge by explaining what role the white glove took in the early 20th century and how it’s role has changed; and the proper etiquette on how a Butler should stand with them in hand. Right there on page 5.

He goes on to explain the traditional roles and titles of household staff and how they have morphed into what they are today; all while entertaining with tidbits of knowledge and skills. From there he covers topics such as Tea Service, Bar Setup, Entertaining Etiquette (including the various tools such as plates, silverware, glassware, and service vessels) to cleaning a room and how to properly iron and fold a shirt. Once you have read it you will be surprised at how much I failed to include in the list, like table manners and how to eat sushi.

Throughout his book Mr. MacPherson mentions “The Bulter’s Toolkit”, yet he fails to mention that this book should a part of any Private Service Professional’s standard toolkit. However he does list some additional books in the back that are also must haves.

Engrossing Fictional Tale

Engrossing account of a purported Bigfoot attack. I generally prefer real accounts of encounters or documentary books on Bigfoot, so initially, I thought that this was a true story. At the very end of the book, a notation in small print stated that this was a work of fiction. That was disappointing. It should've been noted up front that this was a work of fiction.

That being said, it is a very good story, with a lot of bad language. I mention this for readers who may not care for that. The story concerns efforts to find the perpetrator of several attacks at a campground site. I won't give away theme rest, as it should be discovered. This book is an engrossing tale and very realistic and enjoyable. I give it four stars, one deducted due to the fact that it is a work of fiction and not a real account. I probably would not have read it, had I known it was fiction.

I was given this book as a gift. I had never really pursued this subject matter before. I would read stories about bigfoot as I came across them, because I find them interesting, as well as all things "not absolutely proven". This book sucked me in from the beginning. I knew it was fiction when I started reading, but constantly forgot and felt like I was right there with the reporter, looking for answers. I couldn't put it down! A thrilling, spine tingling read!

Wow, is this book ever in depth! If you want to just bartend or run a full fledge bar, this is a good book. I got it because I am building a bar on the back of my home, by enclosing a large porch, and with limited space I want to design the layout of my bar properly. This book has photos, sketches, and lots and lots of really good information. It runs from lay out and design to history of different liquors,etc. Still reading it.

Durham (Walk Through Darkness, Gabriel’s Story) offers a compelling study in contrasts. Pride of Carthage is at once a sweeping saga, an intimate portrait of an individual, a military history, and a tale about love, devotion, and loyalty. Critics hailed such plays in scale, praising Durham for pulling off the risks of writing a panoramic history of epic battles while capturing the dramas of individuals, from Roman generals to North African kings, foot soldiers, and former slaves. Only The New York Times Book Review faulted the subplots involving Imco Vaca and Aradna as “soap operatic.” Overall, the novel is a compelling, well-executed work.

Fresh off a victory in Arbocala, Hannibal Barca, the great Carthaginian warrior, has set his sights on Saguntum, an ally of the growing Roman Empire. An attack on Saguntum will ultimately bring on a war with Rome, but this is what Hannibal longs for. Aided by his brothers, envious Hanno, pleasure-loving Hasdrubal, and shrewd Mago, Hannibal manages to sack the impenetrable city and with the blessing of Carthage begins the long march to Rome that will take him past treacherous Gauls, forbidding mountains, and inhospitable marshes. Durham depicts the great general as a fully rounded, complicated man: he's both a larger-than-life hero, propelled by his great ambition, and an ordinary man, who longs to be by his wife's side and regrets missing his beloved son's childhood. To give the reader a fuller picture of the war from all sides, Durham does not shortchange the lesser players in this great war: he develops characters such as Imco Vaca, a young man in Hannibal's army, who is ill-equipped for war; maimed Tusselo, seeking revenge against the Romans who enslaved him; and Aradna, a much-abused young woman who shadows the army. Fortune's Fate

Make no mistake, there are issues with this book, but David Anthony Durham has done such an incredible job of bringing Hannibal and the Second Punic War to life that I rate "Pride of Carthage" five stars anyway. Hannibal's story of war, struggle, revenge, and hate is one of the most fascinating and evocative stories in human history, but Hannibal's story comes to us through only a couple of classical sources: the larger events of the period are known, but the details passed into antiquity after the Romans razed the city of Carthage and Carthage's entire culture during the Third Punic War. To know Hannibal, then, we must resort to fiction. Several authors have taken on Hannibal's life, including John Maddox Roberts and Ross Leckie. Their books are good reading, but Durham has taken Hannibal's story to an entirely new level, with a fully developed, multi-dimensional Hannibal character, and supporting characters who become so real we feel that they must be historical people rather than fictional characters.

Remember as you read that this is a fiction-Durham has developed his characters so well that it is hard to know what is fact and what is not. This is the first issue I have with the book. While this is a novel and should not be considered a historical reference, Durham does not include the usual pages of explanations and qualifiers: he does not tell the reader what he has invented. The reader unfamiliar with the history of the period probably will not care about this, but they risk passing on what they have read as fact. Secondly, Durham starts to run out of steam toward the end. Events that covered fifteen years are compressed into a period of time that cannot be calculated until a single sentence in which Durham mentions how long Hannibal had been separated from his son. Durham pours so much into Hannibal's early story that it seems as if Durham was just worn out by the time the story comes to an end. Read the book anyway-it is still very enjoyable-and remember that at the end of this book, Fortune and Fate were not yet done with Hannibal-he would go on to live for another nineteen years or so in a life so tragic that Shakespeare couldn't have written it more so. This later period of Hannibal's life could warrant its own book.

Very good story of Hannibal and his wars with Rome. Story line was well developed and descriptive. Some of the characters were not described or characterized in sufficient detail to get to the point where you got to really know them,

wanted to like it, but...

i really wanted to like this. i'm a big fan of things roman and thought it would be great to read about the second punic war from the other side. but this book is about as dry as a text book, and far less informative. the characters are stiff, unrealistic, cardboard heros. others who recommend this talk about epic, sweeping battle scenes. uh... no.

if you read this, not only will you have to slog through over 500 pages of awkward writing and ungainly characterization, but you will gain an innaccurate understanding of the events of this war. this book has little of what makes historical fiction worth while.
